Makoto Yuki, The field leader of S.E.E.S and a wielder of the Wild Card.
These two were initially stand offish and couldn't care less about the world or other people. That was until they one day joined a group that would be like family to them. As a result of gaining this new family their outlook on life would change. Because of this they would ultimately face their universes gods of death in order to protect the ones they love.
Will the Champion of Ravens be able to ferry Makoto's soul into the afterlife or will Makoto's steadfast will be able to live on? That's what I'm here to go over their arsenal and abilities to find out who would win in a DEATH BATTLE!
Before We Begin
For the analysis of Vax I'll primarily be using the Legend of Vox Machina as it's mostly accurate with some liberties taken and I'm more familiar with the show. But, I will also be using moments from the original campaign that match up with the show, and the moments of the original campaign that have not been adapted yet. I will also be scaling him to mainline Dungeons & Dungeons as Critical Role is set in that multiverse.
For Makoto the main version of Persona 3 that I'll be using is Persona 3 Reload as he is at his strongest in this version of the game. I will also be using the spin-offs that he appears in. and scaling him And I will be excluding scaling him from the mainline SMT series. But I will be using SMT IF... and Devil Summoner since they take place in the same universe and timeline. I will also be using supplementary material such as the various Persona manga and anime adaptations so long as they are not contradictory to the games.
Background
Vax
Vax'ildan was born in the town of Byroden along with his twin sister Vex'ahlia and they lived their happily for the first 10 years of their life. This happily life would sadly stop once the twins' father Syldor Vessar called for them to live with him instead of their mother in the secluded elven town of Syngorn. Once they arrived the twins' father would constantly berate and emotionally neglect them. But his time in Syngorn wasn't all bad as even though his father was horrible, he still had Vex'ahlia and some of the elves even trained him in the way of the blade and Vax was the most proficient with his daggers.
Although even with some of the good treatment from other elves, he still was treated horribly by his father. And he really hated it whenever his twin was mistreated by him, to the point where one day after wanting to see an elven family heirloom in secret and being discovered, Vexa'ahlia accidentally broke the heirloom. This lead to the twins father aggressively yelling at Vex, leading to Vax yelling at his father that the two of them were leaving and never coming back.
The two of them then set off an a journey to wherever the wind takes them and during this trying time Vax refined his technique with the dagger and even joined a thieving guild called the Clasp. This time with the guild refined his technique further as is necessary for thieves he developed his stealth. He also gained the trust and cooperation of multiple informations around the world due to the notoriety of the guild. Although his time with the guild would soon come to end and he would continue on his journey with Vex. They would even eventually go back to their home town to see their mother, only to dis In the following years they would encounter and befriend many people of different races throughout their journey. These friends were Grog, the Goliath, Pike and Scanlan the gnomes, Keyleth the Ashari and Percival the human.
With these friends they would form a group of mercenaries and would call themselves the "Super High Intensity Team" until they realized just how unfortunate the acronym was. When the realized this they decided on the name "Vox Machina" which people would take more seriously. This group would go on many different jobs together and would gain a reputation during them that they "fuck shit up." And after a while of traveling together they would stumble across a plot by a dragon to kill the monarch of Tal'Dorei, which they stopped and as a reward they became the protectors of the realm. The group would start by going to Percy's hometown of Whitestone where they would have to fight The Briarwoods, two evil vampires who want to revive Vecna, The Whispered One. And Vax was even mind controlled to being on their side. But ultimately Vex was able to bring him back to his senses and the group defeated the Briarwoods.
The group would then return back home for a conference where a group of three dragons who call themselves the Chroma Conclave arrive and destroyed the city of Emon. Because of this the group decides upon themselves that they have to defeat these dragons to free Tal'Dorei. In this quest Vox Machina learns of powerful tools called the Vestiges of Divergence, which could help turn the tide against the Chroma Conclave. And Vax got his hands on one of the vestiges being a set of armor called the Deathwalker's Ward. Granted he got it through a pretty sad event that being the temporary death of his sister, with him begging the Raven Queen who is the Goddess of Death to take his soul instead. Resulting in him being the new Champion of Ravens and Vex being brought back to life. Giving him new powers and extraordinary speed and strength, and he can even grow wings from the back of his armor and fly. He even got another vestige in the form of a dagger called Whisper.
These two vestiges and the vestiges of that of his friends would indeed help turn the tide against the Chroma Conclave and they were able to defeat the dragons. After this the group split up for about a year with Vax journeying with Keyleth on her Aramente. The group would come back together and would go on a journey to defeat the god Vecna who had been freed and brought into the material plane. And during this journey Vax fought against a kraken but lost and actually died, however he was able to convince the Matron of Ravens to not take his soul just yet and wait until he defeated Vecna and he would go with her willingly. And after the defeat of Vecna, Vax would address the members of Vox Machina one by one before leaving with the Matron letting them know that he would be watching over them always and that he loved them before leaving with the Raven Queen in a puff of feathers.
Makoto
Makoto Yuki's life was marked by tragedy. As a child his parents and possible sibling if your going by the movies died in a car accident leaving him an orphan. And even more traumatic was that he was in the car when it happened and witnessed the deaths of his family firsthand. As a result of this event Makoto would close himself off not wanting to form bonds with people as he doesn't want to lose the people close to him. And because of him not having any other direct family he was moved around a lot, constantly having to transfer to different schools until he found what appeared to be a permanent stay at Gekkoukan High.
As it turns out the reason he was accepted into Gekkoukan was anything other than normal. The reason being that he had the potential to awaken to a Persona, which was studied by the fact that he could be unaffected by the Dark Hour. The Dark hour is a hidden 25th hour of the day that happens right at midnight, in which normal people are transmogrified into coffins and those who are unlucky enough to not be transformed are attacked by monsters called Shadows. And after the person is attacked they go into a catatonic state in where they don't care about anything called "Apathy Syndrome." And as Makoto was unaffected by it the chairman of a club at Gekkoukan wanted to study him and thus Makoto was accepted into the school and told to stay at the special co-ed dorms.
Once Makoto arrived at the dorms he noticed the green sky and countless coffins around him but didn't care, as he casually entered the dorms nonchalantly. He then met two girls named Yukari Takeba and Mitsuru Kirijo, who showed him to where he'd be staying for the time being. On the next day he had his first day at Gekkoukan High and later that day the dorm was attacked by two giant Shadows that would later be known as Full Moon Shadows. During this attack he witnessed Yukari get knocked out by the Shadow and nearly killed and once Makoto witnesses this he flashes back to the car accident and the death of his family, not wanting to relive that incident he steels his resolve and uses Yukari's evoker to awaken to his initial Persona, Orpheus, Master of Strings. After awakening to Orpheus another strange Persona rips apart Orpheus brutally and emerges from him and then brutalizes the Shadow with ease before reverting back to Orpheus and Makoto then passes out from exhaustion.
Upon waking up Makoto is briefed on the situation of the Dark Hour and Shadows and is offered to join Yukari, Mitsuru and a new face in Akihiko Sanada, in the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad or S.E.E.S. for short. In which Makoto accepts immediately and is joined by another new face in Junpei Iori, and they would venture into Tartarus the place where most of the Shadows would spawn and would begin on their mission to defeat Shadows and destroy the Dark Hour for good. And during this time Makoto would become the leader of their operations and gained more allies, such as Fuuka Yamagishi, Ken Amada, Shinjiro Aragaki and even a dog named Koromaru. And while spending time with his new allies, he would grow to appreciate them as friends and even see them as family.
Sadly his time with one his newfound family members would soon come to an end. As on S.E.E.S's full moon operation on October 4th, Shinjiro and Ken would not join them as they had a prior history with that date and decided to settle that matter. And while that was going on the rest of S.E.E.S. fought the full moon shadows and followed after Akihiko who had realized why the 2 missing members weren't present at their battle. And while following after them they witnessed Shinjiro tragically getting shot in front of them in order to protect Ken. And while he clung on to the last remaining life in him, he would tell all of the members of S.E.E.S. to live on in his memory before leaving this mortal plane.
Even though the loss of Shinjiro affected Makoto a great deal and he reverted back to the mental state he was in before he would make bonds, the help of a new friend in Ryoji and his best friend Junpei would bring him back out of his shell. But this too would also come to an end as Ryoji would learn the truth about him and Makoto, that being that Ryoji was an embodiment of Death, meant to bring down and merge with Nyx the full embodiment and goddess of Death. And Ryoji would give Makoto an ultimatum, kill him and forget the Dark Hour and die peacefully, or not kill him and face off in an unwinnable battle against Nyx. And Makoto decided to have hope and fight against Nyx as he no longer wishes to die, but to live on for his friends. And on the day of the final battle he is able to find his answer to life, that being his bonds he made through his year at Tatsumi Port Island. Because of this he awakened to the ultimate power, The Universe Arcana and with this power Makoto was able to use his life force and soul to seal away Nyx. Two months later on the third years graduation day, everyone remembers a promise they made to meet up on the roof of the school and as Makoto's soul was used as the seal he was very tired, but clung on to the last remaining life he had to fulfill his promise and once he saw his friends, he would pass away with a smile on his face, content with his decision and happy for his new family.
Skill & Experience
Vax
In terms of skill and experience Vax has a ton of both, as he started training when he was only a child. And he only continued to train and fight as he got older and even joined a thief guild where he would only continue to fight against various enemies across the world and train with Vex and the other members of Vox Machina for years. And then he got even more skilled once he received the power of the Champion of Ravens as with his Vestiges armor he gets a massive speed and power boost and is able to use it to it's fullest extent as shown above. And he's even helped take down multiple dragons and even a god who had been fighting for at least a century. In conclusion Vax is both a very skilled and very experienced combatant.
Makoto
In terms of skill in combat, Makoto has plenty of it. One example of this being his ingenuity in using the Wild Card as shown above when he swaps out Surt for Mother Harlot in order to destroy the bands binding Surt. And although he isn't that experienced given that he was only the leader of S.E.E.S. for about a year before passing on, he was still skilled enough that Mitsuru and Akihiko knew he'd be the best fight for their leader, despite the fact that they've been operating as Persona users for close to a decade before Makoto got his. And when Shinjiro rejoined S.E.E.S. even he recognized the skill that Makoto possessed and he was part of the team with Mitsuru and Akihiko all those years ago. In conclusion while Makoto lacks experience, his insane skill more than makes up for it.
Arsenal & Equipment
Vax
Blinkback Belt
This belt was Vax's signature item before receiving the Vestiges he now possesses, although he still does own and wear it. This belt has an enchantment on it that any weapon that Vax throws will always return to him. He primarily used this in conjunction with his daggers as his signature move is to throw them at his enemies to deal fatal damage and with very precise accuracy.
Deathwalker's Ward
The Vestige of Divergence that Vax received after telling the Matron of Ravens to take him instead of his sister. With it he became the new Champion of Ravens with new abilities thanks to his new suit of armor. Mainly being that he can go into bursts of extreme speed and can do it constantly. And once he conquered his fear of death he was able to grow a pair of giant raven wings in order to fly. This also gives him the power to see the threads of fate of those around him and see them around the souls of the departed.
Whisper
The other Vestige of Divergence in Vax's possession. Vax came into ownership of this dagger after the defeat of Anna Ripley. This dagger was the one that Vax used in order to finally put an end to the evil dragon Thordak. It also has the power that whenever Vax throws the dagger he can transform into shadow and merge with the blade, effectively teleporting him. Although he can only do that before it hits something so he has to do it quickly.
Makoto
Evoker
An Evoker is a gun shaped item that the members of S.E.E.S. use to summon their Personas. Although it would normally be exhausting or scary as the act of using the Evoker resembles suicide and most people are afraid of dying. Though Makoto has no issues with summoning his as he isn't afraid of death at all.
Battle Gear
New gear that Makoto and the rest of S.E.E.S. got in order to help them more effectively fight against the Shadows. It comes equipped with a cartridge that the members of S.E.E.S. can load into their Evokers in conjunction with being in a specific emotional state. And with these two things combined the can use abilities called Theurgies, basically being super moves. The outfits are also just really cool looking.
One-Handed Sword
Makoto's signature weapon is his one-handed sword. When engaging in melee combat with Shadows and other Persona users alike he uses this weapon to get up close and personal, and slashes at them. And he more than likely has some training with it too as one of the clubs Makoto can join is the Kendo club and as I am looking at him at his strongest, in this blog that's the version of events that happened.
Abilities
Vax
Extreme Speed & Agility
With the Deathwalker's Ward and as the Champion of Ravens, Vax now has the ability to have extreme bursts of speed that he can use as he pleases, and gains a boost to his already insane agility, being able to dodge things flying at him from every direction as show above.
Flight
Another ability Vax got after becoming the Champion of Ravens and conquering his fear of death. He can grow giant raven like wings from the back of his armor to help him fly far distances and observe things from up above. And his flight is even faster than the bursts of speed that the armor provides.
Threads of Fate
The final and most powerful ability that Vax received once he became the Champion of Ravens. He is able to see the threads of fate around people and is one of what is called a "fate-touched." A fate touched is able to weave the threads of destiny as they live on, Vax was able to use this power in order to free Percy's soul from the demon Orthax, effectively resurrecting him. He also has the power to see the future in fate visions with this power and can even see the souls of the departed and can shepherd them into the afterlife.
Makoto
Physical Skills
As Makoto is a Persona user he doesn't have to solely rely on using his sword to deal physical hits on his enemies. He can use his Personas to deal put damage with skills that would do more damage than normal hits from his sword. And in Persona 3 physical is set into 3 different categories, being Strike, Slash and Pierce and Makoto can use all three of them. They are also used by taking a portion of his HP instead of SP like magic does.
Fire Skills
Thanks to being a Wild Card user Makoto has access to a myriad of different personas that can bring the heat to Shadows, in which most of them can cause the burn status ailment. And even the weakest fire spell Agi is described as being thousands of degrees hot.
Ice Spells
Another element that Makoto can use with various Personas is that of Ice. And like how Fire can inflict burn on his enemies, various Ice spells are capable of freezing his enemies in place. Ice skills also restrict the molecular activity of the atmosphere and is capable of freezing to the point of absolute zero.
Wind Skills
Another element Makoto and various of his Personas can tap into is that of the wind itself.
Elec Skills
Yet another element Makoto and his Personas can use. Elec skills are actual lighting bolts that Makoto can call down and can leave his enemies with the shock ailment, which paralyzes them, leaving them vulnerable to attack.
Light Skills
One of the more powerful elements Makoto can use is light itself. Makoto has various different Personas that can use this element and each spell even moves at light speed. These spells are even capable of instantly killing his opponent if they land and the weakest light spell Kouha is capable of erasing the existence of unholy beings with sacred power.
Dark Skills
The fundamentally opposite element of Light, Makoto can use the very concept of darkness to attack his enemies. And much like Light, some Dark spells are capable of instantly killing his enemies if they land and the weakest dark spell, Eiha is capable of erasing the existence of non-evil beings.
Almighty Skills
The ultimate magic in the universe of Persona. Almighty magic has no resistances and cannot be nulled, absorbed or reflected, even by spells like the Karn barriers, which warp the very fabric of space to reflect attacks back. And this insane offensive utility extends to being able to bypass the Omnipotent Orb, which bends the very laws of the universe. And Makoto has a plethora of these to use like the Megido line of skills which can induce annihilation beyond death and can even transform space into nothingness. He also has access to Helel and Lucifer's Morning Star which comes from outer space to destroy his enemies.
Charge
A support skill that a decent amount of Makoto's Personas can use. Once casted this skill applies a 2.5x multiplier to his next physical attack, whether it be strike, slash or pierce. Although though effect will dissipate after Makoto uses a physical attack, whether it hits or misses.
Concentrate
This skill is functionally similar to Charge as it does the same thing with applying a 2.5x multiplier for his next attack. However it differs as instead of applying the multiplier to physical attacks, it does it for magical ones instead.
Buffs/Debuffs
Being a JRPG protagonist. Makoto has a plethora of different skills that can buff his stats and debuff the stats of his enemies. The most powerful buff skill he possesses is called Heat Riser which buffs his speed, defense and power at all once. And his most powerful debuff skill he has is Debilitate which decreases the speed, defense and power of his enemies.
Healing Skills
Another staple ability of JRPG heroes. Makoto has a plethora of different healing skills that he can use. And a mid-level healing spell, Diarama is capable of regrowing entire limbs after they've been destroyed. Makoto even has spells that can help to remove his status ailments that he's been inflicted by.
Attack Type Affinities
As a user of the Wild Card, Makoto has a myriad of different Personas all with different affinities. Meaning that he has access to a myriad of different types of resistances and weaknesses depending on which Persona he has equipped. There a 5 types of affinities Makoto can use, a shield icon means the type of damage is resisted, a no symbol means that the attack type is blocked and nullified doing no damage. A reverse arrow icon means that the attack type is reflected back on the initial user. A heart icon means that the attack is drained and instead of dealing damage, will heal Makoto instead. And an exclamation point means that the attack type is a weakness of one of his Personas.
Velvet Room
As a Wild Card user Makoto can visit the Velvet Room, a place that resides outsides the confines of reality, space and time. This realm mainly functions as a place for Makoto to fuse new Personas and also functions as a safe space to reside in. And other Wild Card users have accessed the Velvet Room mid-combat.
Space-Time Manipulation
In the setting of Persona, the Shadows that the casts battle have the power to manipulate the very fabric of space and time. And as Personas are their users Shadows that are tamed and controlled, it follows that Persona users would have the same ability. And Makoto and each member of S.E.E.S. are able to operate in the Dark Hour, where the very concept of time ceases to exist. This even extends further as after Makoto dies, the rest of S.E.E.S. were able to stop time from progressing due to their grief. And during the events of Persona Q, Makoto was able to operate in Chronos' realm, where time and space hold no meaning, and was even unaffected by Chronos reversing the very fabric of time.
Wild Card
Makoto's main ability is to summon his various Personas thanks to the power of the Wild Card. A persona is the power of the heart and soul. A Wild Card is specials as in the world of Persona only one Persona can exist per person as only one heart and soul exists in a person. But thanks to the power of the Wild Card, Makoto can use multiple different Personas, all with different abilities and affinities. But for the sake of my sanity, I'm only going to go over his main three.
Orpheus
Orpheus was the initial Persona that Makoto awakened to. He is based on the tragic character from Greek mythology. Orpheus specializes in Fire and Strike skills but is weak to both Electricity and Dark skills.
Thanatos
Thanatos is a very powerful Persona that Makoto has access to. He also initially awakened to it just moments after awakening to Orpheus due to the piece of Death that was sealed within him, although he couldn't use Thanatos at will at first, but after becoming way stronger he could handle Thanatos' strength. He is also based on the god of death in Greek Mythology. It specializes in Dark skills and is weak to Light skills.
Messiah
Messiah is Makoto's Ultimate Persona. Achieved by fusing together Orpheus and Thanatos. Messiah is based on the Judeo-Christian Jesus and is theorized to comeback on Judgement Day to judge you. He specializes in Almighty skills and has no exploitable weaknesses.
Theurgies
Theurgies are incredibly powerful super moves that the members of S.E.E.S. can use after loading a special cartridge into their Evokers and pulling the trigger after they're in a high enough emotional state. Each member has their own unique theurgies which usually maxes at being able to use 2, but because as the main protag Makoto has access to 6 different ones, and his special theurgies are fusion spells where he summons two different Personas and casts a spell using the two of them. Theurgy spells also cannot miss under any circumstances.
Cadenza
Cadenza is the first fusion skill that Makoto unlocks, with this spell he summons his signature Persona, Orpheus and Apsaras. This spell restores his health by 50% and also increases his Speed stat.
Jack Brothers
Makoto summons the two signature Personas of the "Jack" line Jack Frost and Pyro Jack. With this spell the two of them tell a joke that causes a medium amount of Almighty damage and has a medium chance to down all enemies.
King & I
Makoto summons another two Personas of the Jack line being Black Frost and King Frost. With it the two summon a massive snowman that does a heavy amount of Ice damage to all enemies that also has a medium chance to freeze them.
Best Friends
Makoto summons the Personas Decarabia and Forneus, where Deacarabia rides on top of Fornues and then they cast their spell on Makoto, which gives him the effects of both Charge and Concentrate simultaneously.
Scarlet Havoc
Makoto summons the Siegfried and Mithras Personas who then summon massive gears that do a severe amount of Slash physical damage to all of his enemies.
Trickster
Makoto summons the Norse trickster god, Loki and the Japanese trickster god Susano'o. This duo of tricksters then summon fire and ice which somehow causes a massive amount of almighty damage to his target.
Armageddon
Armageddon is the most powerful attack that Makoto can use. He summons the Personas Helel, which is Lucifer's angel form and Satan, and the two of them make a cataclysm which does the ultimate amount of almighty damage in the game being 9999 to all foes, but it comes at the cost of lowering his health and SP down to 1 point each.
Universe Arcana
The Universe Arcana is Makoto's most powerful tool. It is an alternate version of sorts to the World Arcana that the other protagonists of the series receive at the end of their journeys and Makoto receives this after finding his answer to life. With it Igor says that nothing is outside the realm of possibility for him. He used the Universe Arcana to seal away Nyx with in the Sea of Souls with his own soul although this did cause Makoto's death.

Makoto

Weaknesses
Vax
While he does have a myriad of strengths and power, Vax does posses his fair share of weaknesses. One of them being that he has a habit of sometimes rushing into dangerous situations once he got the Deathwalker's Ward Vestige. And he can be somewhat overconfident like in his fight with the sphinx Kamalijori.
Makoto
Despite his numerous strengths and vast power, Makoto does have his fair share of weaknesses. Despite the insane number of Personas that are at his beck and call, he can only use one of them at a time. And if any of them take enough damage they will undergo a Persona Break which will disable him from summoning his Personas for a short period of time. And if he loses his evoker he wont be able to summon his Personas at all.
My Verdict
Stats
In terms of their stats Makoto and Vax are relatively even with their Multiversal strength and durability and their infinite to immeasurable speed feats. But Makoto does hold an advantage here as he could buff his his own stats and debuff Vax's stats to stay slightly stronger and faster so this category goes to Makoto ever so slightly.
Arsenal & Abilities
When it comes to their arsenals/equipment they should be equal as neither of them have extensive arsenals. And they should also tie when it comes to abilities as well as even though Makoto does technically have more individually different abilities like his various Personas and Theurgies, Vax's abilities as a Fate-touched more than make up for the difference. And there's also the fact that Makoto needs his Evoker to access most of his abilities compared to Vax who always has access to them. So this category is a tie.
Skill & Experience
When it comes to skill and experience Vax holds a substantial advantage over Makoto in this category. While the two of them are practically even in skill with being able to match the skill of combatants who have far more experience than them. Vax hilariously enough has far more experience than Makoto, especially when it comes to 1v1 situations as Makoto usually fights with his team by his side. So Vax wins this category.
Conclusion
Vax
- Far more skilled and experienced than Makoto
- His teleporting daggers would catch Makoto off guard
- Has better field control thanks to his flight
- Can cause Makoto to undergo a Persona Break, disabling his vast array of abilities for a short time.

- Can possibly seal away Vax with the Universe Arcana...

- Less skilled and experienced than Vax
- Would be caught off guard by Vax's teleporting daggers
- Has less control of the battlefield compared to Vax who can fly
- Vax could hurt Makoto's Personas and cause him to undergo a Persona Break, which would disable him from summoning his Personas
- ...But this would more than likely kill him as it did with Nyx.
This is a battle that comes down to the wire. As I believe this comes down to two specific win conditions. Vax stealing Makoto's Evoker and disabling most of his abilities. Or Makoto using his strongest Almighty attacks. As they match in the stat trinity and their arsenals and abilities mostly cancel out. However I believe that Vax is more than likely to win, as its more in character for him to target something specific when he realizes it will help him than it its for Makoto to nuke Vax with his Almighty magic. Vax could also achieve this more easily than Makoto resorting to use his Almighty magic as due to his teleporting daggers and flight he could pretty easily steal his evoker. And though his Armageddon Theurgy is powerful it leaves Makoto in a state where one hit would kill him and given there matching stats Vax would more than likely survive this. And finally to address the Universe Arcana, while its true that Igor did say that nothing was outside of Makoto's possibility with it, he couldn't use it to actually kill Nyx he had to seal her away due to her being Death, which is what Vax is by the end of his story and even then sealing her came at the cost of his own life so this would only result in a tie for Makoto. So I believe that the winner of this hard fought battle of Death's champions would be Vax'ildan Vessar.
