Jason Grace, The Child of Lightning in Heroes of Olympus
Kyojoru Rengoku, The Flame Hashira in Demon Slayer
These two element wielding swordsmen have fought against many a monster and even their water wielding friend and today I'm here to go over which of them would win in a DEATH BATTLE!
Before We Begin
The main focus of both characters analyses will be the mediums they originate from, that being the Heroes of Olympus and Trials of Apollo books for Jason and the original Demon Slayer manga for Rengoku but feats that expand on and don't contradict the manga from the anime will be used as well. And also as I am not a mathmetician all the sources I took calculations from will be linked here.
Various vsbattle wiki calcs will be linked when I talk about the feats
Background
Jason
Jason Grace should be dead. When his father first had a child with his mother the mortal Beryl Grace, he was the Greek god and lord of the sky, Zeus. But when his mother caught the attention of Zeus the second time, he wasn't technically Zeus, he was his Roman form Jupiter. And as this was technically Zeus' second time cheating on his wife in only a couple of years his wife Hera/Juno was understandably livid and demanded that the boys life be in her hands and for him to be named Jason. Jupiter obliged and came down from Olympus to Beryl to tell her this and that soon he will have to be split from his family as Greeks and Romans aren't meant to coexist as they have always been at odds. The first 2 years of Jason's life were as normal as they could be when you're a demigod and especially a child of the Big Three. Although they definitely could've been better as Jason's mother was distraught after attracting Zeus for a second time only for him to leave her again and she began to have a serious drinking problem, which would sometimes end up resulting in her neglecting her children.
But thankfully Jason had his big sis Thalia to help take care of him and basically raise him in their mother's place. Although one time Jason wasn't in her field of vision and Jason tried to eat a stapler being a toddler and all and obviously that didn't go well which gave Jason his signature scar on his upper lip. Although this slightly happy time with his sister would come to an end one day when Hera/Juno told his mother to drop Jason off at the place she agreed to bring him to when he was born, and in order to appease the goddess she does as she asks and Jason is stranded by himself until the wolf goddess Lupa and her pack arrived to take him to the wolf house to start his training. Jason trained with Lupa and her pack for about a year before Lupa sent him to the camp for Roman demigods Camp Jupiter to join their legion. And as Jason was the son of the king of Olympus he would receive favoritism from the members of the legion and Jason resented this as he just wanted to be treated normally. Like when the legion suggested he join the First Cohort as it's the best one, he instead joined the worst cohort being the Fifth in order to make it the best one. And while at Camp Jupiter Jason had many adventures during his years there.
Like helping out the god of wine Bacchus find his missing leopard in Sonoma, or fighting and defeating the Trojan Sea Monster. And while there he would make a lot of friends and even do such a good job at leading the legion they would make him one of the two praetors of the Twelfth Legion. And he would develop a close friendship with the other praetor Reyna Arellano. And when there were fifteen they would go on a quest to retrieve Imperial Gold weapons from a Civil War submarine. And during his time at Camp Jupiter Jason would learn of a prophecy that his camp dubbed The Prophecy of Seven, which Jason knew would be very important soon. And during his twelfth year in the legion Jason and Camp Jupiter would attack the Titans stronghold Mount Othrys while the Greek demigods would defend Mount Olympus in Manhattan. And during this attack Jason and the Titan Lord Krios would have a one-on-one duel in hand to hand combat and sword fighting in which Jason was actually able to kill the Titan by himself. And after this he toppled Krios' throne and destroyed Mount Othrys and the result of this battle was what made Jason the praetor of the legion.
After this Jason spent two to four months just being himself and hanging out with his friends until one day in either October or December (Rick Riordan is bad at memorizing things sometimes) he went missing from Camp Jupiter. And when he reappeared he woke up on a school field trip with no idea how he got there and no memory of who he was other than his last name and Thalia being his sister. And after killing some storm spirits and meeting two other demigods, Leo Valdez son of Hephaestus and Piper McLean daughter of Aphrodite he would end up being rescued and transported to Camp Half-Blood, the training ground for Greek demigods. Which gave Jason an internal feeling that he definitely shouldn't be there but he slowly grew to love and appreciate the camp. And Jason and the other two demigods he met went on a quest to save Hera/Juno from the new threat as the Prophecy of Seven is finally underway and Hera/Juno was the one who took his memories in the first place and he wanted them back so they went off and managed to save Hera and Jason even fought two giants during this quest and Hera told him that taking his memories was necessary for the exchange to go well in order to fulfill the Prophecy of Seven. And then Hera sent the trio of them back to Camp Half-Blood in order to tell them the hint of their leader Percy Jackson son of Poseidon's disappearance and whereabouts being at Camp Jupiter with no memory.
Jason, Piper and Leo then spent the next six months building a ship made for the sky and sea in order to go find Percy at Camp Jupiter and for their voyage to the ancient lands of Rome and Greece in order to prevent the gods from beyond destroyed at their roots and to defeat the Earth goddess Gaea. And during this time Jason would eventually come to realize his feelings for Piper and the two of them started a relationship. And when the ship was finally finished the three of them plus Percy's girlfriend Annabeth Chase daughter of Athena. The four of them would find Percy and Percy and Jason spark up what seems to be the start of a friendship as they thank each other for protecting their respective camps. But the demigods including two new Roman demigods, Frank Zhang son of Mars and Hazel Levesque daughter of Pluto would be forced to flee from Camp Jupiter and sail to Rome and then Greece while Reyna would deliver the root of the Greek and Roman grudge to Camp Half-Blood being the stolen Athena Parthenos statue. And during their adventures Jason would fight against a numerous amounts of giants including against a giant duo with Percy and came out on top. And then the Seven were sent to Camp Half-Blood where Gaea had chosen her new place to awake, where Jason, Piper, and Leo would kill her once and for all.
And the two camps celebrated this and began to form an allyship and friendship and Percy and Jason would sort of trade camps as Jason stayed at Camp Half-Blood instead of returning to Camp Jupiter and Percy went to college at New Rome University instead of staying at Camp Half-Blood. After his insane summer break Jason would end up going back to public school where the former god Apollo who was turned into a human by Jason's own father would end up requiring Jason's help to explore the Labyrinth and Jason accompanies them, along with Piper. Although Jason hadn't wanted Piper to come with them as about a month before this he and Piper would go into the Labyrinth themselves and Jason would encounter one of Apollo's hidden Oracles and it foretold that if Jason and Piper continued on this path, one of them would die. Though Jason didn't reveal this to Piper as he wanted her to be safe and this led to a big fight between the two of them, leading to them breaking up. But Piper came along with them anyway and Jason was forced to tell Piper the truth. Though this quest would be Jason's last as during the invasion of an enemies ship gone wrong instead of focusing on saving himself, he prioritizes the safety of Apollo, the demigod his bound and made to serve Meg McCaffrey and Piper deciding that he would rather die on this quest than her. And he tells them to go and holds his gaze with Apollo for just a second too long as he is ran through with a spear by the emperor Caligula and dies, and then is stabbed again just to make sure he isn't among the living anymore, ending Jason life at just 16 years of age.
Rengoku
Kyojuro Rengoku was born as the first son of the legendary former Flame Hashira Shinjuro Rengoku. But growing up under such a legendary figure was not at all what you think it would be like at first glance. For one while Kyojuro's life started out well with love from both of his parents and little brother Senjuro who encouraged Kyojuro to use his insane strength that he was born with to protect the weak members of society. Although this time of happiness wouldn't last very long as Kyojuro's mother would fall very ill and pass away from this illness. And Shinjuro would fall into a depression due to both this and his discovery of the original Breathing Style, Sun Breathing.
Due to both of these things Kyojuro's father would develop a massive drinking problem and would become verbally abusive to both of his sons but they would still hold love for their father. And this only deepened Kyojuro's resolve to better himself with his Flame Breathing and he wouldn't slack off in his training to become a Demon Slayer, in which he would eventually partake in the Final Selection exam and suceed, officially becoming a Demon Slayer. And within just a few years of being a demon slayer, Rengoku would be promoted to the highest level of the Demon Slayer Corps, that being a Pillar or Hashira. Officially becoming the new Flame Hashira and taking his fathers place as such. And during his first couple of years as a Hashira he would take in a protege, Mitsuri Kanroji although she struggled with this breathing style and would go off by herself to make her own style derived from Flame Breathing. Though the two of them would stay close friends.
Some time later Kyojoru would learn of a new Demon Slayer, Tanjiro Kamado who would violate the rules of the corps by traveling with a demon, even though that demon was Tanjiro's sister. Being one of the 9 Hashira he was summoned for Tanjiro's trial where he thinks there is no need for this trial as Tanjiro is very clearly violating the corps' rules by traveling with a demon. And when another one of the Hashira suggests killing Nezuko right there, Kyojuro goes along with it at first until his former protege Kanroji suggests to not make this decision without their leader Ubuyashiki's involvement. And when he arrives he tells the Hashira and the young Tanjiro that he will allow Nezuko to live due to her exhibiting behavior more like that of a human than a demon, and the Hashira respect this decision due to their belief in their leader including Rengoku.
About a month after Tanjiro's trial Rengoku is given a mission to investigate attacks on a village nearby and he believes that it could be related to the recent disappearance of about forty people who boarded the Mugen or Infinity Train. So Rengoku decides to go on this train himself to truly investigate the cause for these strange occurrences. He then meets up with another demon slayer at a ramen store both to eat and to learn more information about the mysterious Mugen Train. And after learning some of the info he needs he finds a demon near the train he needs to board which is responsible for the attacks on the small village that he was sent to stop and he goes and kills the demon resolving one half of the problems he was sent to fix, and then boards the Mugen Train to resolve the second issue of the disappearance of people onboard the train.
Some time after he got on the train he would meet with Tanjiro and two of his friends Zenitsu and Inosuke as they were also tasked with the mission to investigate the missing people and Tanjiro wanted to ask Rengoku about his breathing style. When Tanjiro asks him if he's even heard of the Hinokami Kagura he says that he hasn't but when Tanjiro describes what using the breathing style is like he thinks it's similar to Flame Breathing but way too different to be the same thing. And he then explains the rich history of every breathing style that he knows and studied up on and then offers for Tanjiro to be his new Tsukogo being a protege of a Hashira that will take the Hashira's place after death or retirement. And just as he asks this, Kyojuro senses a nearby demon and effortlessly defeats it and the three boys witness this and all ask to be his Tsugoko and Rengoku heartily accepts that he'll train all three of them once they finish this mission.
And a bit after this, a series of events transpires where Tanjiro and Inosuke kill the main demon causing the issues while Rengoku, Zenitsu and Nezuko protect the passengers of the train. And just after that Rengoku goes to check on Tanjiro and Inosuke and congratulated them on protecting the passengers on the train and defeating the demon. And at just that moment another demon popped up to try and kill Tanjiro and the passengers, and this demon was far stronger than the one Tanjiro just defeated which meant that Rengoku had to step in as Hashira, as this demon was one of the Twelve Demon Moons, being in the top 3 in strength. And Rengoku did battle with these demon named Akaza and even managed to give Akaza a tough time and even came close to cutting off Akaza's head which would've killed Akaza. But sadly at that exact moment Akaza also used one of his strongest attacks and impaled Rengoku with his fist, and when he realized that Rengoku wasn't trying to live but take him down while dying and that the sun was coming out soon, he broke off his arms and started to run into the forest to hide in the shadows, with the fatal damage he dealt to Rengoku. Rengoku, realizing he was going to die, decided to talk to Tanjiro and told him not to be sad about his death as it's only natural for a Hashira to give his life to protect his juniors and told him, Zenitsu and Inosuke that he believes that they will all become the next generation of Hashira after him and he dies happily with a smile on his face.
Arsenal & Equipment
Jason
IVLIVS
Pronounced Yulius, this coin was Jason's weapon of choice during his years of adventures at Camp Jupiter. It changes shape into an imperial gold roman gladius if it comes up heads and into an imperial gold javelin if it comes up tails instead. Although Jason no longer possesses this weapon as it was destroyed in his fight with the giant Enceladus.
Juno's Gladius
This weapon was given to Jason as a replacement for his old weapon by his patron Juno as she felt responsible for the loss of his old one. It normally takes the form of an imperial gold gladius, though Jason can will it to take the form of an imperial gold javelin like his previous weapon, though he can't disguise these as coins like he could with IVLIVS.
Rengoku
Nichirin Blade
The main weapon of the members of the Demon Slayer Corp. The reason for this is that it's forged with Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Ore, which absorb sunlight constantly, giving it the power to harm demons as their main weakness is sunlight. Most Nichirin blades change color upon the user receiving them, Kyojoru's is red with a flame-like pattern along the blade alongside the words Destroyer of Demons.
Skill & Experience
Jason
Jason is an exceptionally skilled demigod. He's also by far one of the most experience demigods given that he had been training in the legion since the young age of 3 and continued to do so until his death at age 16. And his skill matches up his years of experienced as while he was possessed by an eidolon he was able to match the skill of Percy Jackson in a swordfight. And Percy is skilled enough to match Luke Castellan in a fight, who was the best swordsman that Camp Half-Blood had seen in 300 years. Jason's skill isn't just limited to his sword, as he is also an expert polearm user, as he was able to easily defeat a master Greek swordsman with his javelin and defeated an army of roman ghosts with his spear as well, and did both without taking a single hit.
Rengoku
Rengoku was an exceptionally skilled combatant. This is evident by the fact that he died as one of the 9 Hashira, being one of the 9 best swordsman demon hunters. But even before that he was trained by his father who also happened to be the former Flame Hashira in swordsmanship. And even after his father stopped teaching him Flame Breathing, he trained himself using the guide book of Flame Breathing, which only had 3 volumes. And his skill definitely backs up his insane training experience as he was able to defeat the Flute Demon by himself. And the Flute Demon had previously killed 9 different Demon Slayers. He was even able to kill the lower 2 rank demon of the Twelve Demon Moons with that demon commenting on his insane skill with a sword. But all these feats pale in comparison of him being able to match the upper 3 rank demon Akaza in a fight and being comparable to him, even if he did still lose.
Abilities
Jason
Superhuman Strength
As a demigod child, Jason has supernatural strength compared to that of a human's and as a child of one of the Big Three gods, his strength even exceeds that of normal demigods. An example of this being that he was able to singlehandedly beat the Titan Krios with mainly his bare hands, and being able to knock around giants as shown above.
Superhuman Durability
Another common factor that demigod children have is their insane durability and especially those of the Big Three. Jason is so durable that he is able to withstand getting hit with a lightning bolt so powerful that it was described as being capable of killing 20 men, with no issue. He was also able to be in the epicenter of a massive explosion that made a crater 30 feet wide and 30 feet deep caused by the destruction of his weapon IVLIVS with only steaming clothes.
Superhuman Speed & Reflexes
Another standard ability demigods come equipped with, usually in the form of ADHD but instead of being purely a learning disability, in this world ADHD for demigods is just their latent battle instincts and reflexes. Jason's are even better than a normal demigods being the son of Jupiter, he's fast enough to be able to catch lightning on his blade on at least 2 different occasions.
Aerokinesis
As a demigod child of Jupiter, whose domain is the sky, Jason has a myriad of powers regarding the winds and air. Jason can "fly" but it's more like channeling the winds and riding them in the direction he wants to go, make massive blasts of air strong enough to topple over giants and even send them flying. He can even manipulate air from other sources that aren't himself like being able to explode Medea's tornados in The Burning Maze.
Electrokinesis
One of the other main powers Jason possesses as a demigod child of Jupiter, he is able to generate electricity. The most common form of it being his ability to summon and channel lightning to hit his enemies with. He can even generate electricity and lightning from thin air like how Percy can with water, and Jason has even used his lightning underwater and with such precision that he was able to avoid Percy while targeting his enemies. These lightning bolts are also incredibly powerful as with one in the Lost Hero he was able to destroy the mansion of King Midas.
Atmokinesis
Another ability Jason possesses from his heritage as Jupiter's son. Jason is able to manipulate the weather to a certain degree, because as the son of the lord of storms, Jason is capable of causing some pretty huge storms. Most notably thunderstorms and he was even able to summon a rainstorm. He even combined his power with Percy once to create a massive storm that lasted 2 full hours to escape the Romans that were chasing them. And later on Jason was able to summon a maelstrom to trap the goddess Gaea.
Rengoku
Indominable Willpower
Kyojouru possessed and insane unwavering will and spirit mainly due to the promise he made with his late mother. Examples of his insane will and spirit mainly come from his fatal battle Akaza as during this fight Akaza injured him to an insane degree like breaking his ribs and collapsing one of his eyes. But even with those tremendously painful injuries, he remained steadfast in his resolve to defeat Akaza, and even got insanely close to doing so.
Superhuman Strength
As a demon slayer and being one of the nine Hashira, Rengoku possesses incredible superhuman strength. Some examples of this are being able to send the demon Akaza flying into the nearby forest with just a swing of his sword. Or lifting an entire train off of the tracks, by simply jumping up and dashing forward. He also has enough power to casually rupture his own eardrums by lightly hitting his ears. He was also strong enough to hold Akaza in place for a significant amount of time, while being impaled in order to cut off his head.
Superhuman Stamina & Endurance
Another ability a decent amount of demon slayers have, and that the nine Hashira have as well is their insane stamina and endurance and Rengoku is no exception. Like in his battle with the Flute Demon, he ruptured his own eardrums and wasn't fazed in the slightest, not showing a single ounce of pain in his face. This also shows in his battle with Lower 2 as he takes multiple bullet wounds and bomb blasts without showing signs of long-lasting damage. And during the Mugen Train mission he was able to defend 5 carts of the train single-handedly without tiring. And in his fight with Akaza he took multiple fatal hits and kept fighting up until he literally was incapable of moving.
Superhuman Speed & Reflexes
Kyojoru is also exceptionally quick and agile. As being a demon slayer he kind of has to be in order to keep up with the supernatural foes that he has to fight. He is capable of exchanging blows with Akaza at such a speed that both Tanjiro and Inosuke comment that they cant keep up with his movements. And before that he was able to catch Akaza off guard when he went to go kill Tanjiro, and slice a good portion of his arm. He can also dash through every car on a lengthy train with incredible speed fast enough to lift the train off of the tracks.
Breathing Styles
The main method that demon slayers use to combat demons are their breathing styles. As breathing in a specific manner increases their lung capacity and the amount of oxygen in their users blood. This allows the user to enhance their physical capabilities and fight the supernatural demons on even ground. And if the user is strong enough their breathing style can actually manifest from their swords, like some Water Breathing users being able to cushion their fall with water and Flame Breathing users being able to send out their flames as projectiles. And advance form of Breathing is called Total Concentration Breathing Constant, in which the Breath user is constantly using their breathing style 24/7 to breath normally which in turn powers up their breath style. And all of the Hashira which includes Rengoku are constantly using the constant variant of Total Concentration Breathing to increase their capabilities.
Flame Breathing
Kyojoru's breathing style that he uses is that of Flame Breathing. Flame Breathing is one of the oldest breathing styles to ever exist with the only two older than it being Sun and Moon Breathing. The users of Flame Breathing typically use it to mimic the movements of flames and are even capable of sending out their flames and even burning their opponents. And Kyojoru is one of the best Flame Breathing users ever. Flame Breathing has at minimum 9 forms although we only see Kyojoru use 6 of them and one of them is a form he learned from his bloodline as a Rengoku.
- First Form: Unknowing Fire - Rengoku dashes to his target at extraordinary speeds, and then unleashes a horizontal slash targeted at the opponents neck for decapitation.
- Second Form: Rising Scorch Sun - Rengoku slashes at his opponent in a vertical upward motion, usually used on the ground against demons who jump at him in the air
- Third Form: Blazing Universe - Seemingly the inverse of Second Form, Rengoku slashes at his opponent in a vertical downward motion, seemingly typically used while he jumps in the air to attack demons on the ground.
- Fourth Form: Blooming Flame Undulation - Rengoku slashes in fluid motion at least once, and can do it multiple times if needed to block from incoming attacks and decapitate multiple targets at the same time.
- Fifth Form: Flame Tiger - Rengoku dashes forward at high speeds and then slashes his sword to create the form of a flaming tiger which envelops him and then he charges forward in the new tiger form.
- Ninth Form: Rengoku - The strongest form a Flame Breath user can wield, although it is exclusive to the Rengoku family. Rengoku increases his fighting spirit before entering a particular stance and then performs an extreme speed dash that carves out the ground under him and takes the form of a giant flaming dragon.

My Verdict
Stats
Strength
There are really two separate ways to interpret the winner of this category, strength and speed. And as strength is much simpler to go over let's start with that. In terms of strength it's absolutely no contest and Jason is flying laps around Rengoku (pun intended). The absolute lowest you could put Jason at would be scaling to Percy destroying Hubbard Glacier which would be 28 kilotons and the absolute best scaling that Rengoku gets is 151 kilotons, which seems good for Rengoku right? Sadly you'd be mistaken as that was just the lowest that Jason could be put at while comparing it to Rengoku's highest point, and if we use Jason's highest point he would be placed at 4.8 to 46 gigatons which puts him in the Island level of strength and 31 THOUSAND at a MINIMUM to 304 THOUSAND at MAXIMUM times stronger than Rengoku.
Speed
Now in terms of speed it's slightly more complicated. The reason for this is that they both have ligthning dodging feats that they have performed or that they scale too so it would seem even. However not all lightning timer feats are even and Rengoku happens to have faster feats he can scale to as his former protege Mitsuri Kanroji dodged lightning at around Mach 2201 and Jason's lightning blocking feat comes in at around Mach 521 to Mach 762 which is about 3 to 4 times slower than the feat Rengoku scales too so Rengoku should take the speed category.
Who wins Stats?
So now you might be wondering if Jason is stronger and Rengoku is faster who takes this category. Ordinarily I would say it's a tie as I did with my Deku vs Izuru blog (check it out please) but I can't in good conscience say it for this matchup as while Deku was still significantly stronger than Izuru, Jason is leagues above leagues above that difference being 31 thousand times stronger than Rengoku at bare minimum and while he is slower, that difference doesn't matter that much due to Jason's ability to fly above Rengoku and one lucky hit is all he would need to put Rengoku down, so Jason would take the stat category overall.
Arsenal & Abilities
This category is way simpler to go over than the previous one as it's really a tie as both Jason and Rengoku only have a singular weapon at their disposal and while Jason does have more powers overall, he doesn't use them that creatively compared to Rengoku's 9 forms of Flame Breathing. So this category gets a tie.
Skill & Experience
This category is also pretty simple though it seems complicated on the surface but in actuality it's pretty simple. When it comes to skill the two of them would more than likely be even as their both expert weapon wielders and are complimented on their capabilities and skills with their weapons. But when it comes to experience I would give it to Jason due to his 12 years of Roman legion training at Camp Jupiter and 6 months of Greek battle training at Camp Half-Blood vastly outnumbers the experience Rengoku has.
Conclusion
Jason Grace
Advanatges:
- Vastly stronger than Rengoku
- Can make up for the speed difference due to his flight
- More experienced than Rengoku
- Can more than likely catch Rengoku off guard with his weapon changing shape
- Has significantly more powers and variable options than Rengoku
Equal In:
- Similar skill
- Slower than Rengoku
- Not as creative with his powers
Kyojoru Rengoku
Advantages:
- Faster than Jason
- Uses his powers more creatively than Jason does
Equal In:
- Similar skill
Disadvantages:
- Vastly weaker than Jason
- The speed difference can be made up through Jason's flight
- Less experienced than Jason
- Could be caught off guard by Jason's weapon changing shape from a sword to a javelin
- While he uses his powers more creatively than Jason, Jason still does possess way more options and versatility with his powers than Rengoku does
This is probably the most clear cut matchup I've done so far, but don't take that as a bad thing this matchup is still incredibly good, especially for Jason matchups as really none of them are good besides this one. But back on topic Jason just has too much power for Rengoku to handle even with the speed difference. So the winner is Jason Grace.
