Yoshikage Kira VS Tohru Adachi (JoJo's VS Persona)

"Some of the biggest serial killers are among the nicest people you will ever meet."
-Steven Magee

Yoshikage Kira, Morioh's Secretly Explosive Serial Killer

Tohru Adachi, Inaba's Secret Serial Killer of the Police Force

Serial killers are some of society's most intimidating people on the planet. And while it may not look it sometimes they even manage to appear mundane. And today I'm putting two of the most notable serial killers up against each other. Will Kira's desire for a quiet life trump Adachi's want for chaos. Or will The Jester's chaos overwhelm the quiet life of the Killer Queen? That's why I'm here to find out who I think would win a DEATH BATTLE!

Before I Start

For Kira, the main focus will be on the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Manga as well as the anime adaptation. With primary focus on Part 4 but I'll also include other parts for scaling purposes.

For Adachi, I'll be analyzing him from Persona 4/Golden, The Arena Games, as well as the anime and manga adaptations of the games. He'll also be getting scaling from Personas 1 through 4, SMT If..., Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers. But no mainline SMT scaling.

And as usual here are all the sources I used to make this blog:

Background
Kira

In the town of Morioh, nothing is out of the ordinary. That included the childhood of one Yoshikage Kira. In fact Kira would make sure that nothing of his life would ever be out of the ordinary. In school he would only get mediocre grades, and he made sure to never to place higher than third in any competitions. Though as much as he wanted his life to stay mundane and ordinary, his desires were anything but that. When he first gazed upon the Mona Lisa and noticed her soft delicate hands, something within Kira had awoke and he cut off the hands of the picture to admire them in secret from then on. And Kira's fascination with hands would continue to grow stronger and stronger. With this obsession even giving him the desire to kill, with him deciding on the day August 13, 1983 to murder an entire family, simply because he could. And with this decision, Kira's urge to kill grew stronger and stronger throughout the years. On top of all of this, he was even supported during this time by his father who had managed to get his hands on a Stand Arrow. Kira's father then used this Stand Arrow to pierce through his son and grant him his Stand, Killer Queen.

With his new Stand came the perfect power to compliment Kira's murderous nature. The power to completely explode anything without leaving a single trace left. And with this Kira would continue his murder spree for years and years, collecting hands from women until he found a new target. All while working a completely normal job as a salaryman without any hints of suspicion towards him until he turned 33 years old. And on what was supposed to be a normal day for him where he planned out a "date" with his new "girlfriend." With his girlfriend being one of the hands of his most recent victim. But all that happiness for him would start to crumble when he accidentally swapped lunches with the middle schooler Shigekiyo Yangu, who when he tried to return the lunch back to Kira discovered a hand within the packaging. And seeing this Kira had no choice but to silence this child forever and after Shigekiyo tries to find his friend Josuke Higashikata, he sadly loses his life in his struggle with Kira. But Shigekiyo's life wasn't in vain, as he manage to deliver a button from Kira's suit to Josuke and his allies, which turned out to be just the thing they needed.

With the button, Kira was able to be tracked down to his favorite tailor and was confronted by Josuke's relative, the famous Jotaro Kujo and another one of Josuke's friends and ally Koichi Hirose. After an intense fight with the duo that left him on death's door, Kira fled to find another Stand User that has the power to change the voice and appearance of people. Which Kira used to take the appearance of Kosaku Kawajiri and take over his life. During this brief period of time as another man he would accidentally make his marriage better by being an actually good husband. But Kosaku's son Hayato realized that the man all of a sudden not being abusive wasn't his father. And after discovering this, in a moment of weakness, Kira killed him. And due to his sheer desperation to hide this from his fake wife to not get discovered, the Stand arrow pierced him again which resulting in his stand developing just the ability he needed.

With Killer Queen: Bites the Dust, anyone who discovers Kira's identity through any means will then explode and die, before resetting time itself by one hour. And the only way to stop him was to get Kira to reveal himself, which Hayato and Josuke managed. And after an extensive battle Josuke and all of his allies corner Kira until fate itself decides to finally punish him. And he dies in one of the most gruesome manners being ran over by an ambulance and even that wasn't enough punishment. As when he went to hell his spirit was completely torn to pieces by all of the spirits of his victims. Putting an end to the monster known as Yoshikage Kira forever.

Adachi

Tohru Adachi desperately wanted some excitement in his life. Growing up he was exceptionally bored throughout most if not all his life. During school he would get the highest grades and score the highest on his exams and even then he'd still be bored. And after graduating he applied to the police force simply so he could legally carry a gun. And while at the police academy he did pretty well. But one day it would come crashing down for him as he made some type of mistake. And due to this mistake, rather than being stationed in a city with any kind of major crime or excitement, he was stationed in the small town of Inaba to be the partner of the detective, Ryutaro Dojima. And Inaba is a town where nothing happens and the most exciting part of the town is it's version of Walmart called Junes. Though due to the fact that practically nothing happens in this town, Dojima and Adachi wouldn't really have many assignments and that resulted in a lack of money and boredom for Adachi.

But all this would change when a cheating scandal broke out between the idol Misuzu Hiiragi, TV announcer Mayumi Yamano and the politician Taro Namatame, Adachi was assigned to protect Yamano to make sure no harm came to her. But Adachi also discovered the rumor of the Midnight Channel, where allegedly if you looked at the TV at Midnight it would show your soulmate and when Adachi looked at it he saw the silhouette of Mayumi Yamano. So when the two were alone he tried to make advances on her but she rejected him which sent Adachi into a state of rage and he pushed her against the TV in the room and learned that he could enter it, as he pushed Yamuno into the TV. And the next day Mayumi Yamuno was discovered hanging from telephone polls, killed as a result of Adachi's actions. Which finally gave Adachi some much needed excitement. And the very next day a similar thing happened where he saw someone in the midnight channel and attempted to make an davance on her. Only to ultimately be rejected, a good thing since she was a high schooler. But Adachi didn't take being rejected too kindly and this time he deliberately pushed the girl in the TV to kill her. And when she came up dead in Inaba the next day Adachi acted none the wiser. And he would get even more excitement when another person showed up on the Midnight Channel, and he would receive a call from none other than Namatame. And in order to finally spice up the town he convinced him to find the people on the Midnight Channel and throw them into the TV in order to "save" them.

This led to an almost year long cycle of people being thrown into the TV world but being saved by a group of teenagers, led by the nephew of his partner, Yu Narukami. And Adachi loved this game of cat and mouse, to the point where he would "accidentally" leak information about the ongoing investigation to Yu and his allies. But one day Adachi got kinda tired of no one dying. So he sent a letter to the Dojima residence that threatened Yu to stop saving people or else someone he cared about would be killed. Which actually ended up with Yu being brought down to the police station as Dojima saw Yu open this letter and wanted to protect his nephew. Though this surprised Adachi, but his plan ended up working given that Yu's younger cousin Nanako ended up being kidnapped by Namatame and taken into the TV world. And this turn of events even had Namatame become the primary suspect of the serial murders as well as the kidnappings. But when Yu's group thought things through and came to the conclusion that Namatamae couldn't have been the murderer.

And with this, the three brain cells of the group Yu, Yosuke and Naoto came to the conclusion that only Adachi could've been the murderer. Since only Adachi would be able to deliver an unstamped letter directly to the Dojima residence without suspicion. So shortly after the Investigation Team, Adachi accidentally confesses to knowing about the TV world, after which he flees into the TV world to find some solace. But even he couldn't escape the seekers of truth for long and the final confrontation began. With Adachi revealing that he too is a Persona user with his Persona, Magatsu Izanagi. And after a long battle Yu and his crew were able to take down Adachi and even convince him that there's actual meaning to living life. And with this new outlook and being utterly exhausted, he immediately confessed to the murders at the start of the year and willingly went to prison to try and become a better person.

Skill & Experience

Kira

While Kira has one of the most impressive stands in JoJo's, his skill with using it isn't the greatest. As Kira typically relies on Killer Queen's ability to blow things up instead of trying to master fighting with it. But he isn't completely without skill, he was able to personally kill Shegechi who had previously given both Josuke and Okayusu trouble during their Stand battles. And Kira has plenty of experience with using Killer Queen to murder women for over 15 years. Kira also has great battle IQ with him encountering the Stand Stray Cat which had the power to shoot condensed bubbles, he combined it with Killer Queen's bomb transmutation. Which resulted in Kira being able to shoot long range bombs at his enemies.

Adachi

Adachi surprisingly is one of the most skilled combatants within Persona. Which given that he had only used his Magatsu-Izanagi to fight once during Persona 4. Which was the fight against the Investigation Team, and even with the numbers disadvantage, he was able to put them on the backfoot. His skill gets even crazier as during Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Adachi could keep pace with the former members of S.E.E.S., now called the Shadow Operatives. The reason this is particularly impressive is that S.E.E.S./ Shadow Operatives have the Persona users Mitsuru Kirijo and Akihiko Sanada. Who have been fighting against shadows dating back to their middle school years.

Arsenal & Equipment

Kira
Stray Cat

One of the strangest pieces of an arsenal that I've covered. Stray Cat is a plant Stand that has the ability to shoot out condensed air bubbles, and since the bubbles are made of air you obviously can't see them. It can also use this to shield itself from attacks. After befriending the plant cat in his own way Kira stored it within Killer Queen's chest. And with it he combined both it's ability to blow things up with Stray Cats air bubbles in order to make exploding air bubbles.

Adachi

Revolver

Given his status as a police officer, Adachi carries the standard Nambu M60 which is the standard sidearm given to Japanese police officers. It holds 5 bullets in its chamber each being .38 caliber. While most people would choose to shoot their enemies with a gun, Adachi isn't most people and normally uses it as a melee weapon. But should he so choose to he can also just shoot people with it and even use it to summon his Persona for more powerful attacks.

Abilities

Kira
Bomb Transmutation

Killer Queen's main ability is that simply by touching any object, whether they be inanimate or not, they are then turned into a bomb. And Killer Queen's bombs are incredibly deadly being able to completely shred the person affected by them from the inside out. And due to Kira's desires to keep his killing private, Killer Queen developed the ability for its bombs to completely incinerate the body and belongings of his target. Which helped him keep his life as a serial killer secret for almost two decades. Though Kira's bombs can only detonate when either Kira or Killer Queen push their thumb into their index fingers middle phalanx. And if for some reason he or his Stand can't do that then the target won't detonate.

Sheer Heart Attack

Another application of Killer Queen's bomb transmutation ability is that it has more than one bomb. It's secondary bomb, Sheer heart Attack is a long range mini stand that rolls around like an RC car. It can continuously explode itself and is so durable that it can withstand multiple Stand rushes from Jotaro's Star Platinum. It's also heat seeking, constantly moving towards the largest heat signatures before detonating itself. This bomb is tied to Kira's as it's a detachable bomb from Killer Queen's left hand.

Bites The Dust

Killer Queen's third and final bomb as well as being one of the most convoluted things in JoJo (that's not saying much tbh). With Bites the Dust, Kira plants a mini version of Killer Queen on to someone else and that Killer Queen becomes completely autonomous from Kira himself. But it still acts to protect Kira as anyone who discovers Kira's identity as a serial killer is then blown up and killed before time itself is rewound by one hour. And this continues until all of Kira's enemies are destroyed. As each person killed by Bites The Dust during one loop becomes fated to die during the next one. The only way to stop this is for Kira himself to expose his identity or through a direct physical confrontation.

Adachi

Physical Skills

Given that Adachi's a Persona user, his gun isn't his only way to dish out physical damage. With his Persona he even deals out more damage than he would do with his guns and even lessens the risk of he himself taking damage as he can send out his Persona to get in close. Though in order to cast physical skills he has to sacrifice a portion of his HP rather than his SP which is used for magic.

Elec Skills

Adachi has the ability to use his Persona's magic to call down lightning on his enemies. This has a chance to inflict the shock status condition which leaves the person paralyzed and unable to move for a brief period of time.

Wind Skills

Another element that Adachi can use his Persona to use its magic for. He can summon incredible gales and even miniature hurricanes.

Heat Riser

Adachi has access to the skill Heat Riser which buffs his strength, speed and durability at the same time for a few minutes.

Mudoon

Adachi has the skill Mudoon of the Dark element which has a 60% chance to just straight up instantly kill his enemy.

Status Ailments

Adachi also has the ability to inflict certain status ailments on his enemies. The most common one being Evil Smile which inflicts them with Fear. Which he can then follow up on with the skill Ghastly Wail, which instantly kills anyone with the Fear ailment. He also has the skill Foolish Whisper, which Silences the target, preventing them from summoning their Persona.

Space-Time Manipulation

Within the world of Persona the Shadows have the ability to manipulate the very fabric of time and space. And given that Personas are just Shadows that have been tamed and controlled, Persona users have the same ability. The casts of Persona 3 and 4 even show this further as they were completely unaffected by time itself being reversed.

Guardian Spirits
Kira
Killer Queen

Kira's manifestation of his fighting spirit, that stands by his side is his Stand, Killer Queen. Killer Queen is the source of all Kira's abilities as well as being a pretty damn strong Stand on top of that. It's a short range Stand that has immense speed as well as powerful punches. So it's a pretty good thing for Kira to have and a nightmare for his enemies to face.

Adachi

Magatsu-Izanagi

Adachi's inner manifestation of his heart and soul, is his Persona, Magatsu-Izanagi. Magatsu-Izanagi is the catalyst for most of his skills and abilities. But Adachi can also fight side by side with it to dish out high speed combos, as well as sending it out to fight against other Personas and Shadows without risk to himself for the most part.

Feats

Kira
Overall
  • Haunted the town of Morioh for almost two decades
  • Required multiple Stand users to finally take him down
  • Befriended a Stand using plant
  • Was the first known person to get pierced by a Stand arrow twice

Power

Adachi

Overall
  • Caused chaos in the peaceful town of Inaba
  • Tricked both the Investigation Team and Inaba Police Force
  • Joined the good guys in the end
  • Helped Yu Narukami kill a god

Power

Speed

  • Can dish out insanely high speed combos in the Arena games
  • Kept up with the Investigation Team and the members of S..E.E.S.

Durability

Scaling

Kira
Joestar Family
-Credit to Yuletehdoof of the G1 Team

With Kira's status as the main villain of Diamond is Unbreakable, he was obviously able to face off against it's main protagonist Josuke Higashikata. He's also able to contend with Jotaro's Star Platinum whenever time isn't stopped. And Jotaro's repeatedly stated to have the strongest Stand/ability ever. So Kira should be able to scale to the main family.

Villains

-Credit to Yulethedoof of the G1Team

Kira is the main villain of Part 4 and the strongest one up to that point in the series so he should scale to the previous villains.

Stand Users
-Credit to Yuletehdoof of the G1 Team

Kira's Killer Queen is one of the most impressive Stands in all of JoJo's and constantly threatend the Morioh gang who had some of the strongest Stand Users. So Kira should scale to the random minor threats and allies.

Adachi

The Investigation Team

Adachi has constantly been shown to be on par with the members of The Investigation Team. Especially when it comes to their leader, Yu Narukami. And he even teamed up with Yu to take down a god before. So he should scale to any feats performed by them.

S.E.E.S.

Adachi was able to show relativity to the members of the Shadow Operatives during Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. And given the Shadow Operatives are the former members of S.E.E.S. he should scale to most feats performed by them.

The Phantom Thieves

While it seems odd at first that Adachi could scale to the Phantom Thieves, allow me to explain. Given that he's able to show relativity to the members of both S..E.E.S. and the Investigation Team he can scale to them. But this is further supporting evidence that he should scale to the Thieves too given that during Persona Q2, The Phantom Thieves showed relativity to the prior groups mentioned. And since Adachi scales to them he should scale to the Thieves too.

Weaknesses

Kira

As impressive as he is, Kira does have his faults. He can get incredibly cocky during fights and usually just relies on Killer Queen's ability and never bothered to actually train with his Stand to get better at fighting. Especially since he views his Killer Queen's ability as unbeatable so he even brags during fights. This mindset has even left him getting the piss beat out of him by better Stand users like Jotaro. And on top of all that any damage his Killer Queen sustains, he will also and vice-versa. And this extends to fatal damage as if his Stand dies, he will too.

Adachi

Even with his numerous strengths, Adachi does have his fair share of weaknesses. His sense of pride is incredibly dumb with him intentionally leaking information to the Investigation Team, only to get pissed that people weren't dying anymore. And if his Persona takes enough damage he will undergo a Persona Break and won't be able to summon it for some time.

My Verdict

Stats

When it comes to their stats it's not a contest. Adachi is infinitely stronger and faster than Kira. With the stuff that Kira can do and scale to only maxing out at about city level. With a possible highball of Universal given the nature of Bites The Dust blowing away an hour of time itself. Compared to that of Adachi who himself has a feat of killing a god that was going to destroy the Sea of Souls, an at minimum 7-D plane. If you want an explanation for why it gets that high, here are links to G1's Joker VS Giorno blog, my Joker VS Ben 10 blog and my Joker VS Legionis Blog. Just scroll the cosmology sections. On top of all that the fastest feat Kira can scale to comes out to 1,500 times faster than light. Comparing that with Adachi's best, he can scale to Makoto Yuki who travelled directly from the Physical Reality to the deepest part of the Sea of Souls. And given that he could do that, that's immeasurable. So Adachi takes stats hands down.

Skill & Experience

This is a bit closer but also fairly easy to explain so expect a short summary. Kira has more direct experience as a killer but has also never fought another Stand user prior to part 4. While Adachi lacks the killing experience but has fought a number of different Persona users. So this should result in a tie.

Abilities

Now for the bread and butter of this discussion, how Kira and Adachi's abilities play off each other. To get it out of the way early Adachi wouldn't be affected by either Sheer Heart attack or Killer Queen's main bombs. He's just way too powerful for them to matter. This whole discussion is surrounded on Bites The Dust and if Adachi has a way around it. And I believe he does for two main reasons. The first reason is that simply Adachi would not care to try and find out Kira's identity as a serial killer and would mainly just try and kill him. And the second is that by their nature Persona users are immune to time manipulation and have explicitly showed their immunity to time being reversed which is what Bites The Dust does.

Conclusion

Kira
Advantages:
  • Has more experience as a killer
  • Bites The Dust is tricky to counter...
Disadvantages:
  • Loses the stat trinity by a margin of multiple infinities
  • Less direct fighting experience
  • ...But Adachi's power as a Persona user means it still wouldn't work

Adachi

Advantages:
  • Eclipses Kira in the Stat trinity by a realm of multiple infinities
  • Has more direct fighting experience
  • More than likely resists Bites The Dust
Disadvantages:
  • Less experienced killer

All in all this matchup is pretty clear cut. Adachi just has all he needs to win. With the garguantuan stat gap, more direct fighting experience and a more than likely resistence to Bites The Dust. So with all of that accounted for, the winner is Tohru Adachi.

Will VS Maelle (Metaphor: ReFantazio VS Expedition 33)

"We don't create a fantasy world to escape reality. We create it to be able to stay."
-Lynda Barry

Will, The Fantasy Idealist of Metaphor: Refantazio

Maelle, The Fantasy Escapist of Expedition 33

Fantasy worlds and stories have existed for far longer than anyone really knows and these two are some of the best representations of fantasy stories and worlds in modern gaming/RPG history. And today I'm putting them to the test to see whether fantasy worlds a dream to aspire to or simply an escape from reality. It's the idealist versus the escapist to see who would win a DEATH BATTLE!

Before I Start

For the analysis of Will I will be using the feats of the one video game he appears in being Metaphor: Refantazio, as well as the statements from some of the games weapons as he can wield all of them. And the damage output from even the strongest weapons are nothing compared to the Archetypes so he should scale above. I will also not be scaling him to any Persona or Shin Megami Tensei titles except for an explanation of how Almighty works as it's extremely similar to how it works in the other major ATLUS titles.

For Maelle things are way simpler, I'll just be using Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for her feats and scaling. I'll also be using her with all her skills and weapons unlocked to make sure she's at her best.

Also be warned that there are INCREDIBLY MAJOR SPOILERS for both games as their both relatively new and the matchup itself is even a spoiler. As if you know the twist for one game then you can probably guess the twist for the other. So be warned and read at your own risk.

I'll also be linking the sources I took from in order to help make this blog:

Background
Will

In the world of Metaphor: Refantazio everyone's status is determined by their tribe. The hierarchy of this world the tribes on the higher end would be the Clemars, Roussaintes, Ishkia and Rhoag tribes. And on the lower end of the totem pole would be the Nidia, Mustari, Paripus and on the bottom of the rung, the Elda. And unfortunately for our protagonist, the young boy named Will he had the misfortune of being an Elda. Due to simply being born as an Elda, Will would grow up being discriminated against so he chose to stay in the comfort of his village. Unfortunately even his solace in his own village couldn't even last as on one tragic day Will's village would be burned down to the hatred of his tribe. Thankfully Will was able to escape from this attack and live on and even more luckily he encountered The Prince of the Kingdom of Euchronia. And The Prince took such a liking to Will that he ended up convincing his father the King, Hythlodeaus V to take him in. So with being taken in by the royal family, Will would end up growing a close friendship with The Prince, with the Prince even sharing a book with Will that they would read together about an ideal world where everyone was united and no one was discriminated against simply for the circumstances of their birth. And The Prince wanted to make the country of Euchronia like that fantasy novel when he became king, which was a goal that Will wholeheartedly supported.

Though even this time would be cut short as there would be an assassination attempt on the Prince's life. Though this attempt did fail it still resulted in the Prince being inflicted with a slow acting curse that would eventually take his life. So when the curse got really bad and he was no longer responsive, a resistance to free him was formed with Will joining in order to free his friend. So he was entrusted a mission along with his Fairy guide and companion Gallica to infiltrate the state army to relay a message to another member of the resistance known as Grius. So Will enlisted in the army and even met a new friend from a fallen house of nobles Leon Strohl de Haeliatus or just Strohl for short. Though everything immediately went wrong as soon as the new recruits were dispatched on their very first mission. The recruits were attacked and all killed by a monstrous figure simply known as a Human. And for whatever reason, instead of running away from it Will and Strohl decide to fight this monstrous being, though it doesn't go well and they're almost killed for it. But on the brinks of death Strohl tells Will to run away while he distracts the enemy but Will's heart wouldn't accept that and he awakens to a power that the Hero Kings of legend once utilized, Archetypes. With this new power Will killed the human and saved Strohl and even Grius showed up after. With Will and Gallica giving him the mission to kill the man who slew the king and allegedly cursed The Prince, Louis Guiabern.

And since Will was The Prince's friend he wanted to join in on the mission to help his friend, and his new ally Strohl also joined up, with Strohl even awakening to his own Archetype. So the trio went back to the Royal Capital Grand Trad for the King's funeral where they planned to strike and kill Louis, with the plan of Will and Strohl causing a distraction while disguised as soldiers with Grius using the distraction to cut a clear path and kill Louis in a single strike. However this would all turn out to be in vain as before he was slain the King used the Royal Magic to declare how the next king would be selected by whoever was the most popular candidate by the Day of Heroes. And since Louis was near the top of the rankings the King's Magic held Grius held in place as it protects the candidates from assassination attempts, and Louis promptly killed Grius. Louis then had his right hand man Zorba attack the Grand Cathedral to steal the Royal Sceptre for him to gain tremendous power with Will and Strohl deciding they had to stop him as well as their new ally, Eislen Hulkenburg joining them to help avenge Grius. And after the trio defeats Zorba they then have to fight against a massive human that he resurrected with his powers as a necromancer. Though with the power of their Archetypes they take down the human and save the Royal Capital. And a couple days later the news of the Tournament for the Throne was announced where anyone could enter a competition to win the Throne for themselves. With Will deciding to enter it in order to get closer to Louis to figure out how to either cure the prince or kill Louis. And in order to participate in the Tournament Will has Hulkenburg reach out to a man named Neuras and they end up using a gauntlet runner custom made for The Prince.

The first task of the Tournament was to bring the head of a monster to the city of Brilehaven. But instead of seeking out a monster head, Will has the group go after a notorius child kidnapper in order to get into Louis's good graces. So Will goes to the city of Martira and actually learns that the alleged kidnapper, Heismay Noctule was framed and the actual criminal was the chief of the city and Sanctoress of the Sanctist Church, Lady Joanna. Who would kidnap children and feed them to a human as a result of her grief of losing her own child. And with Heismay's help they kill the human and free Lady Joanna from her insanity and bring her to the Exhibition. And with this stunt Will finally gets Louis' attention and even joins his rank. After Louis has Will swear fealty to him he invites him to his soiree where he would have an important announcement, though that was still a long ways away, which gives Will a bunch of time for his current goal of infiltrate Louis' gauntlet runner and find the formula of the spell that cursed The Prince to find a way to cure him. And after securing a route to Louis' private quarters Will would be formally introduced as a new member of Louis' ranks. After that he initiated his plan to sneak of from the party to infiltrate the Gauntlet Runner to steal the formula for The Prince's curse. Although as soon as he finds the formula he's spotted by a member of Louis' team Juani Cyguns better known as Junah. But Will and Junah both realize that they're after the same thing and are actually on the same side. But another member of Louis rank's Iadeus Glodell, realizes that the two of them are traitors and Will and Junah fight him and are able to win, with Will's stunt from the Exhibition even protecting him from a blindside assassination attack meaning Will was near the top of the rankings now.

After this Louis gives Will and his crew their first mission to obtain the divine relic Drakodios, as the next task for the Tournament was to find and present a divine relic to the Sanctist Church in Montario. With this task Will and his group which now includes Junah went to the far off land of Virga Island to find and obtain Drakodios. Though he would be monitored to be actual right hand men of Louis, Fidelo and Basilio Magnus, as they suspected that Will had a hand in Glodell's death. So off Will went to Virga Island where they learned of the Mustari's tradition of sacrificing the priestess to tame their Dragon God. But when the chief Edeni and the priestess who happens to be his sister Eupha went to the dragon temple, they ended up attacked by monsters and get separated, with Edeni fleeing back to the village and Eupha proceeding further into the temple. And with Edeni not wanting his sister to die he makes a deal with Will that if he saves his sister and brings her home he'll lend him Drakodios. So Will ventures into the dragon temple and finds Eupha, with her leading them to the bottom layer of the temple where Drakodios lies, though she still insists on sacrificing herself as the tradition, but Will ends up convincing her there's more to that tradition. As both Will's group and Eupha learn that the tradition is actually that the priestess was supposed to help the Dragon God rather than give her life away. Especially when they reach the Dragon God and notice it's being controlled by a Human and that's why it's attacking everyone as it's not in it's right mind. With this revelation Eupha awakens to her own Archetype and helps Will's crew free the Dragon God from the Human's possession. And she even has the Dragon God take it's rightful place in Drakodios and formally joins Will's ever growing posse.  After receiving Drakodios and learning that Louis planned to use the lance to kill the top ranked candidate, the Sanctifex Forden. So Will tests out Drakodios by having Strohl try and attack him with it, with him having to deflect the blow as the lance bypassed the King's Magic. With the knowledge that Will now possesses he comes up with the idea to hae Neuras use his skills as a craftsman to make a fake Drakodios and use the real one to kill Louis for good. So on the day of the presentation Will and his gang give Louis the fake Drakodios while keeping the real one.

And during Junah's performance Will throws the lance at Louis and gives him a fatal injury but doesn't manage to kill him. Once Louis realizes that Will was the traitor he confronts him on the roof of the Opera House now having Drakodios, but gives Will the chance to challenge him to a duel which completely nullifies the King's Magic and allows them to both harm each other with Louis even throwing the lance to the wayside. And since Will had both the numbers advantage and had already struck Louis with Drakodios he ends up winning the duel, but Louis power still manages to briefly overwhelm him. And right as that's happening Eupha uses her powers to throw Drakodios at Louis but he dodges. Though Will catches the lance and stabs it right through the tyrant and seemingly kills him. After the party seemingly kills Louis they rush to the inside where Will explains that the lance was their relic that bypasses the kings magic that they used to kill Louis in order to avenge the king and prince. And once that was all over Will checks on the status of the Prince but still sees his curse afflicted him, and thus learns that the one who cursed him wasn't Louis with him suspected Forden of the crime instead. So Will goes and confronts him for this with Forden technically denying it as though it was his plan, he had someone else perform this curse for him. Just as that happens it's revealed that both Zorba and Louis are still alive and Louis uses Drakodios as he got it from Zorba to bypass the King's Magic to kill Forden.

And in a fit of rage and defiance Louis shoots a beam of magic from Drakodios at the spectators of the competition. Which the Magnus brothers block as after spending time with Will they've come to appreciate the value in friendship and protecting the weak with their own strength. But Will witnesses another tragedy caused by Louis as Fidelio pushes Basilio out of the way of the blast and lets himself be killed to protect his little brother. And after this Louis leaves, and Basilio even awakens to his own Archetype and formally joins Will and gives him the idea to boost his popularity even further by having him pretend he's the Prince as they look virtually identical. So Will does exactly that and even finds and confronts the one who actually cursed the Prince and defeats them, finally freeing The Prince from his long slumber. Unfortunately for them Louis had Zorba spy on them and both parties rushed to the Eldan Sanctum to get to the prince first. But sadly Louis' faction got there first and killed the Prince. With Will and his group getting there to go see his body, and once he sees the body of the Prince, Will realizes something and that something is that he and the Prince are actually one and the same. As Will was functionally a living Archetype made of The Prince's will and desire to travel the world and since he is The Prince Will merges back with His Highness and finally becomes complete and unlocks his most powerful Archetype, The Prince.

With this new power Will returns back to the Royal Capital to confront Louis one more time and vows to defeat him. Especially after hearing of his plan to use the anxieties of everyone to turn them into Humans and see who comes out on top. So Will and his party have their final battles against Louis and his many forms and though it seems like Will killed Louis for good this time, he still kept coming and even developing the ability to fly after fusing with his Gauntlet Runner. So in response Will's Prince Archetype fuses with his own Gauntlet Runner to create the Ultimate Archetype, The King. And in one mighty swing of his sword he finally puts an end to the tyrant of Louis Guiabern. And the next day was the day of his coronation as king with Will addressing the public and promising to do his best. We then pick up about a year and a half later where Will is neglecting his paperwork to go out in the city to hear the complaints of the citizens on a street level. With most of the problems of the country being fixed but since Will can't fix all of them he decides to go on another cross kingdom adventure with his crew now known as the King's Six Partisans. With Basilio even bringing Grius' daughter on for the adventure. Just know that as long as Will is the king he'll do his best to make fantasy reality and help anyone in need.

Maelle

In the city of Lumiere lives don't typically last very long as under the rule of The Paintress, once she paints a number that she counts down from on her massive monolith every year, the people that age simply die as they turn into dust. As such some people choose to not bring children into this doomed world but just like in real life, sometimes life has other plans. And these other plans would bring the woman named Maelle to life. Though due to the fact that her parents were already old by the time of her birth, her time with her parents didn't last very long. And as a result she would pass around from foster home to foster home until one day she was taken in by a man named Gustave and his sister Emma and the three of them would become a proper family of sorts. Though not all seems lost in the apparent doomed world as every year after the annual Gommage an Expedition sets off to take down the Paintress and free everyone. With Gustave joining in on this years Expedition and even creating new inventions to help out, and even though she was still years away from her own Gommage, Maelle joined the Expedition as well. So after the Gommage, Expedition 33 set sail to the fractured Continent to hopefully defeat The Paintress.

Though this hope didn't last long because as soon as the Expedition touches land they find a strange sight. An old man who wasn't affected by the Gommage, and that old man casually slaughters almost every member of Expedition 33. So Maelle runs with Gustave hoping to survive but a blast comes there way and they end up being separated. With a mysterious man coming in to save Maelle and take her to a strange manor where she woke up at. And upon waking up at the manor she meets another strange man known as The Curator who while he looked hostile, he was actually very friendly and even helped train and care for Maelle. So Maelle stayed with him for a bit until Gustave and Lune, another surviving member of Expedition 33 came to get her to continue on the Expedition. And so Maelle rejoined the crew where they would even find another surviving member of the Expedition in Sciel. With the crew of four then continuing on their journey to enlist the help of Esquie to help swim across the sea to reach the Monolith where The Paintress lies. But first Maelle and the Expeditioners had to go find a rock that increases Esquie's lifting strength so that he can actually carry the crew while he swims. And once they find the rock Lune and Sciel jump onto Esquie's back but Maelle convinces Gustave to throw rocks like they used to do in Lumiere as a mini celebration. However this was a decision that she would come to regret as the old man from before came back and shot a sword beam straight through Gustave's torso with Gustave telling Maelle to run. But when she didn't run Gustave had no choice put to put her in a protective bubble where Maelle had no chance to help and witnessed her brother and father figure be killed by this man.

Just after that she is able to break out of the shield bubble but is too late to help Gustave. And just as she reaches his body the man tries to attack her and claims that one day she'll understand why he had to do this, but his attack is intercepted by another person. With this Maelle takes the opportunity to jump on Esquie's back while the two men clash. And once Maelle joins Sciel and Lune, Esquie swims to the nearest island to help them escape. Once they escape and reach the island Esquie senses Maelle's sadness over Gustave and gives her a much needed hug. After a couple hours on the island the man that saved Maelle joins them to explain who he is, a man named Verso, who joined the first ever Expedition, Expedition 0 over 67 years ago. Though the reason he's still alive is due to the fact that The Paintress made him immortal and he's tired of watching all his friends die and living a life he doesn't want. So he joins up with the team at Maelle's behest, and Maelle even gives him the armband of Expedition 33 to make him an official member. And Verso tells them that if they are to defeat The Paintress they should recruit one his oldest friends Monoco. That way they could get to her through Old Lumiere without having to go through the Monolith as they could strike directly at her heart instead of having to pierce the barrier surrounding the Monolith. Once the gang successfully recruits Monoco they journey to Old Lumiere where the citizens use to live until an event called the Fracture happened. And once they get there Maelle and Verso end up being separated from the rest of their crew but they marched on until they reached an incredibly familiar looking manor. And when Maelle looked around to tell Verso about this he disappeared from sight. So Maelle had no choice but to press on by herself until she reached the manor. Where a girl who looks just like her and the heart of The Paintress open the door for her and just as that happens Verso reappears to challenge her only to be met with the old man.

Where the old man reveals to Maelle that Verso hadn't been telling the whole truth about who he was, as Verso just so happens to be his son. Though Verso tries to reassure Maelle that the two of them had been estranged for years and that he wants to defeat the old man, now known as Renoir. And right before Maelle and Verso start to fight Renoir the rest of the expedition joins them to help them out with the fight. After the group successfully manages to survive Renoir's onslaught Maelle and Verso try to reach the manor once again, but are unsuccessful and the manor teleports to a different location with The Paintress, the Maelle look a like and Renoir all disappearing with it. As a result of this Verso gets insanely angry as now they have to try and defeat super powerful enemies known as Axons to get their hearts in order to have The Curator craft a weapon capable of breaking the barrier around The Monolith. After the group is successful in defeating the Axons Maelle presents The Curator with their hearts and he crafts a weapon for her that should be capable of destroying the barrier. So the next day Maelle and the rest of the Expedition travel to the Monolith where Maelle uses her new weapon to shatter the barrier and allow her and the rest of the team entry into the unknown area. After delving deep into The Monoltith the group is once again approached by Renoir, with Maelle determined to kill him for what he did to Gustave. So the group has their final fight against Renoir with them finally being able to defeat him with even The Curator coming to help out Maelle, the two of them actually manage to kill and even seemingly Gommage Renoir.

With him out of the way the last obstacle that remained was The Paintress herself. And once Maelle reaches her she is struck with a vision of her face being lit on fire with The Paintress even calling her Alicia. The name of the Maelle look a like who also happens to be the daughter of The Paintress and Verso's sister. But Verso reminds everyone that this conflict is what the Expeditions were created for. And after a long and tiring battle Expedition 33 finally manages to defeat The Paintress with the massive number on her Monolith disappearing with it as well. So the Expedition flies back to Lumiere to celebrate both the success of Expedition 33 and the end of the yearly Gommage. And while everything seems fine at first, Lumiere is then hit by a massive wave of Chroma that Gommages the entire city even though The Paintress is gone. With Maelle being one of those people but that wasn't the end for her. As Maelle wakes up in the real world and regains her memories of her true identity of Alicia Dessendre. As it was revealed that the world Alicia spent 16 years in as Maelle was actually a Canvas world painted by her older brother Verso. But due to a tragic event which led to a house fire Verso sacrificed his life to save his younger sister. And in order to cope with her grief Alicia's mother Aline took residence within Verso's canvas and painted copies of all her family members as well as human life from within. And with that going on Alicia's father, Renoir wanted to bring Aline out of the Canvas before it kills her, which led to a struggle that persists in a stalemate. So Alicia's older sister Clea has the idea of helping out Renoir by having Alicia go into the Canvas in order to destroy it. But once she enters the Canvas she becomes overwhelmed by Aline's Chroma and is instead reborn as Maelle.

After recovering her memories Alicia goes back into the Canvas and strolls through the empty streets of Lumiere and finds Verso sitting alone. So Alicia goes up to talk to him and Verso reveals to her that he knew this would happen the whole time and that he's not really Verso nor is she Maelle. Though Alicia still says she prefers the name and still calls herself Maelle while within the Canvas. And soon Verso and Maelle are approached by Maelle/Alicia's father, the original Renoir. Where he says that Alicia did an excellent job in expelling her mother from the Canvas but that they still need to destroy it in order to make sure no one gets lost in it ever again. But Maelle doesn't want to destroy Verso's canvas as it was the last remaining piece of his soul that the Dessendres had left. Which led to another city wide Gommage caused by Renoir now revealed to have been The Curator which even Verso was affected by. But thanks to Maelle remembering her powers as a Paintress she was able to repaint Verso. And after the two pseudo family members escape from Renoir. And Maelle tries to repaint Lune and Sciel but wasn't able to at first. But with a little help from Verso, Esquie and Monoco she was able to bring back her friends. After bringing back The Expedition Maelle talks to Verso about finding a letter that Painted Alicia wrote for her that Verso threw away. And wants to talk to her in order to thank her and ask her why their mother kept her scars from the fire.

So Maelle convinced Verso to take her to meet Alicia at the top of a massive tower like structure. Where at first she would only talk to Verso but ended up sharing a vision with Maelle and the two of them seem to have bonded. And Alicia has one last request for Maelle as she challenges her original version to a duel. After Maelle defeats Alicia, Maelle decides to give Alicia a new beginning and Gommages her. Which has Verso incredibly angry at her as she killed the last of his family, though Maelle insists that Verso still has Expedition 33. But Maelle does still apologize as even though the Gommage is what Alicia wanted she didn't let Verso have the chance to say goodbye to his sister. But Maelle also learned that Verso let Gustave die and that he could have saved him from Renoir so both of them have basically killed the others sibling, making them even. After that revelation Maelle resolves to defeat her father in order to force him out of the Canvas so she can stay. So Maelle uses her powers as a Paintress to make her own army of fallen Expeditioners to counter Renoir's own army of Nevrons.

After completing her army Maelle led the Expedition back to Lumiere to challenge her father for one last duel, which results in Renoir taking on the form of The Curator once again. After a long battle Renoir summons the Axons to help him out as he was the one who painted them in the first place, giving him a massive advantage. That was until Aline managed to find Verso's canvas again and infiltrate it to help out her daughter in her fight against Renoir, and the two teams start their fight once again. And after a truly long and exhausting conflict, The Expeditioners finally manage to defeat Renoir. With Maelle telling him that she will come home from the Canvas soon, but she would like to stay in it for just a bit longer. And while that does convince Renoir to live with Aline, Verso sees this for the lie it actually is and jumps to the core of the Canvas to try and convince his originals soul to stop painting. But Maelle decides that she needs to stop Verso from destroying Verso's Canvas, which leads to the two of them having one last fight over the fate of the canvas. This leads to one of two endings depending one who you play as. And since this is Maelle's story I'll talk about her ending. Once Maelle confronts and defeats Verso in their duel, she refuses to unpaint her pseudo-brother even though he desperately begs for his life to end. After this seemingly many years pass and it's revealed that Maelle was able to repaint the enitrety of Lumiere, including Verso who is now able to age. Though Verso still realizes he's trapped in a life he doesn't want before starting his show at the Opera House and sees that Maelle is sadly showing signs of a slow death due to her overexposure to being in the Canvas. But to Maelle that doesn't matter as she finally gets the happy and comforting life she's wanted since the fire.

Skill & Experience

Will

In Metaphor: Refantazio, Will is one of, if not the most skilled combatant in the entire Kingdom of Euchronia. Not only was he able to awaken the power of the Hero Kings of legend, he was able to on numerous occasions match the combat ability of Louis Guiabern and even surpass him. This is partically impressive as Louis was able to become a military commander by the time he was 18 years old. On top of all that Will is also incredibly adept at using magic as well, being able to use it without needing an igniter. And is also compared to Louis who as well as being a master tactician by 18, he was also so skilled with magic that he was practically considered an archmage. He's also incredibly well trained, given that he's received training from both Heismay and Hulkenburg, two of the most prominent members of the kingdom's night army. With Hulkenburg being so good at it that she was even chosen to protect The Prince despite her young age at the time.

Maelle

In terms of raw combat ability and skill, Maelle is near the top of just how skilled anyone could be. She was able to only catch up to and impress Verso. Who has been fighting for at bare minimum 67 years due to him being a member of Expedition 0. She can also actually defeat him in combat in her ending. She's also shown the ability to grow and get stronger at an exponential rate, going from nearly helpless against Painted Renoir to being able to defeat him no more than a few days later. She can even defeat Painted Alicia who has all her moves and skills.

Arsenal & Equipment

Will
Various Weapons

Will has one of the most extensive arsenals that I've ever covered on these blogs. Given the fact that Will can use any Archetype, he can also wield every single weapon. But in order for me to retain my sanity I'll only briefly mention the types of weapon he can wield with every Archetype. With the Seeker/Prince Archetypes he wields one handed shortswords and with the Warrior Archetype he wields massive greatswords. The Mage lineage of Archetypes has him wielding magic staffs and the same goes for the Healer Archetype but with magic rods with even the Summoner lineage using magic rods. When using The Faker lineage he wields daggers he can throw and with the Knight lineage he wields lances. With the Gunner lineage he can use crossbows and with the Thief Archetype lineage he uses swords built for assassinations. With the Commander lineage he wields semaphores and with The Masked Dancer he uses fans. And finally with the Merchant lineage he uses abacus's and with the Berserker lineage he uses massive Axe's. Although Will's weapon of choice is usually the sword Dragon's Legacy, given to him by his mother the Eldan queen. And this sword comes with the power of turning it's normal swings into Almighty damage, meaning that it cannot be blocked.

Maelle
Rapiers

Maelle's primary weapons of choice are her various rapiers as she has a fencing type of fighting style. Maelle has a plethora of these that she can use all with their own unique elements and effects. But her main weapon of choice is the weapon she received from The Curator in order to destroy the barrier around the monolith. Called Barrier Breaker this weapon deals Void damage meaning that it'll do damage no matter what and cannot be blocked.

Abilities

Will
Archetypes

The power once utilized by the old Hero King's of legend, that Will awakened to in order to protect Strohl. While at first he could only channel the Seeker Archetype, Will can channel and utilize every Archetype in the game, with the sole exception of the Royal Archetypes of his party members. But to make up for that he has his own unique Archetypes that he can use as well.

Seeker

The original Archetype that Will awakened to in order to save Strohl. This Archetype is a jack of all trades type as it's efficient in wind skills, healing skills as well as being able to cast buffs and debuffs. Though one downside it has is that as a jack off all trades it's still a master of none. The Seeker also has two evolved variants with the Adept version being the Magic Seeker and the Elite variant being the Soul Hacker.

Mage

The Archetype that represents Will's Fairy Guide and companion Gallica. As you can probably guess by the name this Archetype specializes in dealing damage with elemental magic. With it's main elements being Fire, Ice and Electricity. It also can evolve further into the Adept variant of Wizard and the two Elite variants of Warlock and Elemental Master.

Warrior

The Archetype that represents the heart of Strohl. This Archetype specializes in dealing out physical slash damage that can target a singular or all enemies. It also has evolved variants with the Adept variant as the Swordsmaster and the Elite variant of Samurai.

Knight

The Archetype that represents the heart of the royal knight Eiseleen Hulkenburg. This Archetype specializes in tanking hits and all out defense. It even has a unique skill that makes all enemy attacks target the caster instead of any other party member. Like usual it too has evolved variants with the Adept being the Magic Knight and the Elite being split into the Dark Knight and Paladin.

Thief

The Archetype that represents the heart of Heismay Noctule. This Archetype specializes in dealing out physical dark damage with chances to insta-kill. As well as dealing out single target slash damage. Its Adept variant is the Assassin and its Elite version is the Ninja.

Masked Dancer

The Archetype that represents the heart of the songstress Juani Cygnus. This Archetype is a more unique one as it's specialty is changing it's affinities and abilities depending on what mask is equipped. Another specialty it has is that it can give enemies a weakness to virtually every elemental type in the game, It's basically a massive reference to Personas and the Wild Card users. This is further proven by it's Elite version being the Persona Master.

Summoner

This Archetype is a representation of the heart of Euphausia Etoreika. This Archetype specializes in summoning as the name suggests. It can even summon the gods and demons from various mythologies and religions. Like the Masked Dancer this Archetype is also a reference, but a reference to mainline SMT rather than Persona. This too is further proven by its Elite variant of the Devil Summoner.

Berserker

The Archetype that is a representation of my boy Basilio Lupus Magnus. This Archetype specializes in dealing out incredibly high physical strike damage. And it can even increase that damage with the use of the skill Charge which multiplies the next physical attacks damage output by 2.5 times. It's evolved variant is the Elite, Destroyer.

Gunner

The Archetype that represents the heart of Neuras Corax. This Archetype specializes in dealing out long range pierce damage that also causes various status ailments. Like all Archetypes before and after it that I listed it too can evolve further into the Adept Sniper and the Elite Dragoon.

Healer

The Archetype that represents the gentle natured soul of Maria Alces. As you can probably guess by the name, this Archetype specializes in party wide healing. Whether it be healing wounds or alleviating status ailments, the Healer can heal all. It's even stronger versions are the Adept Cleric and the Elite Savior.

Brawler

The Archetype that represents the heart of the bounty hunter Catherina Grann. This Archetype specializes in dealing out physical strike damage. Although it's unique in the fact that rather that using MP to casts it's skills it uses Will's HP instead. It's evolved variants are the Adept Pugilist and the Elite Martial Artist.

Commander

The Archetype that represents the heart of Elphas Bardon. This Archetype specializes in physical fire damage as well as support and formation skill. And it's one of the few Archetypes to switch it's specialty when it evolves as the Adept General focuses on Ice attacks rather than fire. But the Elite Warlord goes back to focusing on fire attacks.

Merchant

The Archetype that represents Brigitta Lycaon. This Archetype specializes in dealing Almighty damage with skills that cost the in game currency of Reeve. And it's unique as the Almighty attacks also have a very high chance to land a critical hit. It's evolved variant is the Elite Tycoon.

Faker

The Archetype that represents the swindler Alonzo Crotalus. This Archetype specializes in debuffing enemies and removing the enemies buffs. It's evolved variant is the Elite Trickster.

Prince

Will's true and exclusive Archetype he gained after re-merging with the body of The Prince. This Archetype specializes in dealing out physical Slash and Almighty damage as well as magic light damage. The Prince Archetype can also be used as a substitute for any other Archetype in the game when it comes to using Synthesis skills. And with The Prince equipped Will resists every affinity type in the game.

King

The Archetype Will awakened to after merging his Prince Archetype with his Gauntlet Runner in order to match Louis after he did the same thing after he turned into a human. This Archetype comes with a massive power boost as he was able to kill Louis with a single slash from his sword in this state as well as the ability to fly from the wings of the Gauntlet Runner. Although you could argue that this Archetype is nonstandard as Will would usually need his Gauntlet Runner for it, I still included it for the sake of completion.

Synthesis Skills

Synthesis Skills are practically the ultimate abilities in Metaphor. Although Will would usually require the help of a party member to cast these skills, that's more of a gameplay thing than a lore thing. And even if it wasn't, Will would still ultimately be the one casting them so I think they're fair to include. Will has a plethora of these for each Archetype he can use but in order for me to stay sane I'm only going to mention the ones I think are the most important with each Archetype they can be used under, similar to my Dan Vs Gingka blog.

Maelle

Parry

An alternative to dodging in order to avoid taking damage, Maelle can choose to try and use her weapon to block and parry attacks instead. And should Maelle be able to parry every attack in a combo she'll answer back with a counter that deals insane damage of Maelle's weapon's element.
Stances

Maelle's unique form of combat revolves around her 4 stances that she can be in depending of the skills, weapons, Pictos or even regular attacks she uses. Her default stance is ironically enough being Stanceless with no positive or negative effects. There's also the Offensive Stance which increases her damage output by 50% but also increases her damage taken by 50%. Her Defensive Stance reduces her damage taken by 50% and increases her AP by 1 every time she dodges or parries successfully which is helpful since AP is what she needs to use her skills. And finally Virtuose Stance dramatically increases her damage output by 200%.

Skills

And speaking of Skills, Maelle has a plethora of skills that she can use all with their own unique effects and elements. Though most of her skills do use the element of her equipped weapon, there are also a myriad of skills that already have a dedicated element. Her skills are also able to switch her Stances depending on how they are used.

Offensive Switch

One of Maelle's three default skills. This skill does low damage of whatever element Maelle's weapon is and applies the Defenceless status condition on her enemy. This skill also switches Maelle's stance to Offensive after the skill is used.

Spark

This skill does a low amount of single target Fire damage and only hits once. It also applies 3 Burn to her enemy but if its used in Offensive Stance it applies 5 Burn instead. After the skill is used Maelle's stance changes to Defensive.

Swift Stride

This skill does a small amount of single target physical damage that also changes Maelle's Stance to Virtuose if her target is burning. It also recovers her AP a small amount.

Percee

This skill does a medium amount of single target Physical damage that does extra damage to the target if it's Marked. This skill normally costs 5 AP but if it's used in Virtuose Stance the AP cost is lowered to 2. This also changes Maelle's stance to Defensive after it's used.

Fencer's Flurry

This skill hits all enemies for medium damage of the element of Maelle's weapon 1 time. It also applies the Defenceless debuff to her enemies and switches her stance to Offensive after the skill is used.

Fleuret Fury

This skill does high single target Physical damage 3 times. If Maelle uses this skill while in Virtuose Stance, she'll stay in it rather than switching Stances. But if it's used in another Stance she reverts back to her Stanceless state.

Breaking Rules

This skill does a low amount of single target Physical damage with 2 hits. It also completely eradicates the enemy's shields and Maelle gains 1 AP per shield destroyed with this skill. Breaking Rules changes Maelle's stance to Offensive after its use.

Burning Canvas

This skill does a high amount of single target Void damage and hits 5 times. It also applies 1 Burn per hit with the damage increasing the more burned her target is. After using this skill Maelle's stance changes to Offensive.

Combustion

This skill does a medium amount of single target Physical damage and hits twice. It also can consume the Burn on the enemy up to 10 in order to increase its damage output. After the skill is used Maelle's stance switches to Offensive.

Degagement

This skill does a low amount of single target Fire damage that only hits once. After this skill is used and the target is hit, the target of the skill will become weak to Fire Damage for two turns. Also after it's used Maelle's stance changes to Offensive.

Guard Up

This skill applies the Shell buff to Maelle and her teammates, reducing the amount of damage she takes dramatically for up to 3 turns.

Guard Down

This skill applies the Defenceless debuff to all of Maelle's enemies for 3 turns. It also changes Maelle's stance to Offensive.

Gustave's Homeage

A skill that Maelle developed as a way to honor Gustave. This skill does a high amount of single target Lightning damage and hits 8 times. It also does significantly more damage to the target if its Marked and even keeps the Mark on the enemy. After the skill is used Maelle's stance changes to Virtuose.

Last Chance

This is a more risky skill as it reduces Maelle's health all the way down to 1 in order to gain her max amount of AP being 9. It also changes Maelle's stance to Virtuose after the skill is used.

Mezzo Forte

This skill reapplies Maelle's current stance in order for her to stay in it longer and also gives her back a range from 2 to 4 AP.

Momentum Strike

This skill does a high amount of single target damage of Maelle's weapons element and hits once. It also does increased damage to her targets if they have a Mark. After the skill is used Maelle's stance changes to Virtuose.

Payback

This skill does a high amount of single target Physical damage that hits 1 time. Normally the skill would cost the max amount of AP being 9 but the cost is reduces by 1 AP per the amount of times she successfully since her last time. After the skill is used Maelle's stance changes to Defensive.

Phantom Strike

This skill does a high amount of Void damage that both targets all of Maelle's enemies and hits them 4 times. It also gives a massive 35% increase to the Gradient charge for Gradient attacks (more on those later). After this skill is used Maelle's stance is changed to Defensive.

Pyrolyse

This skill does an extreme amount of single target Fire damage and hits 3 times. It also applies 3 Burn to her target per hit of this skill with a maximum amount of 15 Burn applied. If the skill is used while Maelle is in Offensive Stance the Burn applied per hit will be increased by 2 making the maximum amount of Burn will instead by 21. After the skill is used Maelle's stance changes to Defensive.

Rain of Fire

This skill does a medium amount of single target Fire damage and hits twice. Every time the skill hits it applies 3 Burn to her target for a max amount of 6. Although if it's used while in Defensive Stance the Burn applied per hit increases by 2 for a new max of 10 Burn. After this skill is used Maelle's stance changes to Defensive.

Revenge

This skill does a high amount of single target Fire damage and only hits once. As the name kind of implies this skill does extra damage for each time Maelle got hit during the previous turn. After using the skill Maelle's stance changes to Defensive.

Stendhal

This skill does an extreme amount of single target Void damage and only hits once. It also removes the shields on Maelle's own Health but as a trade off it applies the Defenceless debuff to her target. After this skill is used Maelle reverts to her default state of Stanceless.

Sword Ballet

This skill does an extreme amount of single target damage of the element of Maelle's weapon and hits 5 times. Every time Maelle lands a critical hit with this skill it'll do double the damage instead of the normal 1.5 times increase. After using this skill Maelle's stance changes to Defensive.

Gradient Attacks

Gradient Attacks are ultra powerful skills that Maelle can only use when the Gradient Counter is filled up. The max amount of charges she can have is 3 but each level of her Gradient attacks takes up the appropiate amount of charges. With her level 1 taking up 1 charge, level 2 takes 2 charges and level 3 takes up 3 charges.

Virtuose Strike

Maelle's level 1 Gradient Attack. This does a high amount of single target Physical damage and hits them 5 times. As the name implies, after this Gradient Attack is used Maelle's stance changes to Virtuose.

Phoenix Flame

Maelle's level 2 Gradient Attack. This applies 10 Burn to all enemies and revives Maelle's allies with 50 to 70% of their health back. Though the revival aspect isn't useful in a 1v1. After using this Gradient, Maelle's stance changes to Offensive.

Gommage

Maelle's ultimate ability that she gained after remembering her powers as a Paintress and her level 3 Gradient Attack. This skill will instantly kill anyone substantially weaker than Maelle. And if it lands a killing blow the target is functionally erased from existence as they're removed from the Canvas. Although even if the skill doesn't kill it will still do a massive amount of Void damage and hits once.

Gradient Counters

Basically an enhanced version of Maelle's parries to normal attacks, Gradient counters parry the Gradient attacks used by other combatants. It can also counter abilities meant to insta kill like Renoir's vanishment or Osquio's world destruction.

Paintress Powers

Forms

Will
Magla Will

The form that The Prince of Euchronia's will and dreams took on in a physical form made of magla thanks to his mother, the Eldan Queen. This is the form that Will spent most of his journey in as he had his memories messed with to not remember being The Prince. And in this state he looks almost identical to The Prince with the main differences being his hair being blue rather than white and his eyes being two different colors.

The Prince

This is Will's actual body that he lived in as The Prince until he became incapacitated by the slow acting curse which resulted in his desires being made into a physical being. Not much is known about The Prince which isn't already known about Will, with the sole exception of him being a hybrid between a Clemar and Elda although he mainly has Elda traits.

Prince Will

After Magla Will recovered his memories of who he truly was and merged back with The Prince, this was the result. His body inhabits both the spirit of who he was before the merger and the old spirit of His Highness The Prince. This is basically Will's true form and his strongest as he awakened his true Archetype of The Prince after achieving this form.

Maelle

Alicia Dessendre

Maelle's true form is the youngest child of the Dessendre family of Painters, Alicia Dessendre. This was what Alicia was supposed to be like in Verso's canvas before being overwhelmed by her mother's chroma. As Alicia, she has the powers of a Painter/Paintress but none of the combat ability she gained as Maelle. And if Verso's ending is chosen then this becomes the official state of Maelle. No longer Maelle but just Alicia Dessendre.

Maelle

After being overwhelmed by Aline's Chroma, Alicia Dessendre was reborn in the Canvas as Maelle. This is the state she spends most of the game in and 16 years of her Canvas life in as she had forgotten all about her previous life as Alicia. This is also the form where she gains most of her combat ability as well. And due to the fact that she had technically become a painted being, she was able to be effected by Renoir's Gommage.

Paintress Maelle

After being evicted from Verso's canvas, she woke back up in the real world as Alicia. And after reentering the Canvas with all her memories as Alicia she was able to achieve a form that was functionally a fusion of Alicia Dessendre and Maelle. She has all the combat ability and then some that Maelle did, as well as the powers to manipulate a Canvas that Painters and Paintresses have.

Scaling

Will
Louis Guiabern

Will was able to match Louis multiple times throughout the story and was even able to kill him with a single slash from his sword after awakening to his King Archetype, so he should be able to scale to any feats Louis has performed.

Weapon Statements

Will can wield every weapon in the game depending on which Archetype he has equipped. And even the strongest weapons in the game with the best statements aren't capable of dealing out the damage the party members can do with their Archetypes. So I believe Will would scale to them and their wild statements of what they can do.

As a member of the Dessendre family as well as a Paintress, Maelle has the same powers and abilities as her family members. She was even able to help defeat both her father and her mother, and in her ending she takes the role as The Paintress of Verso's Canvas. The only person in the family she might not scale to would be her older sister Clea, as by her own admission only she has the skill and power to paint over someone else's creation.

Before My Verdict
Almighty Magic Scaling

While I might not be scaling him stats wise to SMT you could definitely make a case for it due to the amount of references to it within Metaphor. But I personally don't agree with scaling him to the stats of the series just yet. However hax-wise I think it should be fine simply due to the Devil Summoner Archetype bringing up the Sea of Souls/Hearts in order to summon the deities that appear. Due to this Will's most powerful attacks, the Almighty element should have the same properties they due in Persona. Meaning it can bypass any barriers, proven by when Drakodios which does Almighty damage bypassed the King's Magic both against Will and against Forden when Louis killed him. And if any Almighty attack kill someone they will end up being erased from existence.

The Size of Verso's Canvas

The size of Verso's canvas is incredibly important to understand just how strong the characters in Expedition 33 actually are so I'll be going over the main arguments I've seen in support of it. One of the main things is that chroma is needed to both create and manipulate the Canvas. And everything within the Canvas is real. So Verso used his Chroma in order to create his Canvas which has its own stars. On top of that Esquie says that he used to fly in outer space with Verso all the time when he had his flying rock Soarie. And not to mention they are numerous characters that refer to the world they're in as a universe. There's even an attack from Esquie's evil twin/cousin Osquio where he simply decides to destroy the world and if you fail to counter it you instantly lose, implying he destroys the Canvas. So due to all of these points I believe that Verso's Canvas would be the size of a universe.

My Verdict

Stats
While this category normally seems like it should be a clean sweep for Maelle I believe that there's a bit more debate and nuance to this topic. Starting with strength feats their capable of performing themselves, Will can summon massive meteors and recreate parting the Red Sea coming in at 5.37 Gigatons. Compared to Maelle who can parry her father's black hole coming out to 1.75 FOE which is Large Star Level at the high end. So going by that Maelle obviously outclasses, where things get interesting is when we factor in the weapon statements that I think Will should get due to he himself outputting more damage than the weapons he uses. So when factoring those in he can match Maelle's black hole feat with the Astral Saints Fists statement of crushing stars, and can go even further with two of his weapons stated to be able to destroy the universe. And even more impressive is that Maelle can still keep up with these Universal ends with scaling to Verso who created a whole universe with his Canvas and being able to parry Osquio's canvas destroying attack. So in strength they end up evening out. Although speed is a bit of a different story, at first it seems even due to both combatants being able to dodge lightning. It actually ends up with a decisive victory as though Will can use a lightspeed attack in the Ultimate Energy Ray, scaling him to Louis dodging it only comes out to 42% the speed of Light. And compared to Maelle who can outright dodge or parry Simon's lightspeed attack combo, meaning she has to have been moving faster than light obviously. So with all these things considered Maelle should take stats.

Versatility
Another category that seems like a clean sweep for one combatant but I still think there's merit to discussing. Both Will and Maelle have a frankly insane number of weapons and skills at their disposal with most of them all being unique and accomplishing different things. But even considereng all of that, Will still just has too much for Maelle to reasonably catch up, with both his variety of weapons which he can switch out just like his Archetypes and when he switches them out not only does he completely changes his skills and affinities. So this category should belong to Will.

Offence & Defence
This category is a pit more peculiar so let me explain for a bit. What I mean with this category is which off the two combatants has ways to harm each other or get around them. And while the title of it is a bit weird this is by far the simplest category to get a result for. That being a tie as even with the various elements they can both use, Maelle doesn't have a conventional weakness and can shield herself and with The Prince Archetype Will resists all affinities other than Almighty, with him also being able to form barriers. Luckily for both of them they can still hit each other through those barriers with Void and Almighty damage as both are still capable of hitting through barriers, like Maelle destroying the Gommageing barrier around the Monolith with Barrier Breaker which does Void and weapons that do Almighty damage like Drakodios piercing through the King's Magic. So this category results in a draw.

Abilities
For the final and most important category I have how their abilities stack up on each other. And for the most part they're pretty even with both of them having ways to harm each other no matter what the other does and holding their own advantges with Maelle being faster and Will having far more variety in his abilities and arsenal. Where this gets a bit more interesting is when we compare their one-shot existence erasure abilities, with Maelle's Gommage and Will's Almighty attacks. While Almighty attacks are definitely more spammable then the Gommage, should they hit and erase Maelle, she could still come back. Like she did after being hit with Renoir's Gommage. While that's technically because she can re-enter a Canvas in order for her powers to work that's where this fight would have to take place in anyway. On top of that due to being faster than Will, Maelle could simply dodge the Almighty attacks. But unlike Maelle being able to return to the fight after being erased, Will has no meaningful way to return from being Gommaged. So the final category would go to Maelle.

Conclusion
Will
I like this gif so I'm using it twice, sue me
Advantages:
  • Significantly more versatile with his weapons and Archetypes
  • Matches Maelle in strength with their high ends
  • Can always harm Maelle due to Almighty attacks
  • With Almighty attacks that one-shot and kill, can technically erase Maelle...
Disadvantages:
  • Slower than Maelle
  • Significantly weaker than Maelle without their high ends
  • Can always be harmed through Void damage
  • Has no ways to come back from being Gommaged
  • ...Maelle can come back from being functionally erased

Maelle

Advantages:
  • Stronger than Will without using both their highest ends and still matches with Will when using both their highest ends
  • Faster than Will
  • Can always harm Will through Void damage
  • Can come back from being erased through Almighty damage
  • Can erase Will far more thoroughly than Will can to her
Disadvantages:
  • Is significantly less versatile than Will
  • Can always be harmed due to Almighty attacks
  • Can be erased for a short period of time

Overall, this was a very fun matchup to do research for, especially since both Metaphor and Expedition 33 are some of, if not the best RPGs to come out in recent memory. Seriously if you've read this far without playing them for some reason go do that. But back on topic due to her superior stats, being unable to be blocked through Void damage and straight up erasing Will through her Gommage, The King would end up being painted over by the ruler of the Canvas. The winner is Alicia Dessendre, AKA Maelle
