Whitebeard VS Makarov (One Piece VS Fairy Tail)

Makarov Dreyar AKA Gramps, The current master of the Fairy Tail Guild.

Everyone desires to be a part of a family, and to these two nothing matters more than the family they fostered and became close enough with them to consider them their children. And I'm here to see who would have the highest capability to protect their family against each other in a DEATH BATTLE!

Before We Begin

For both characters analysis I will be using the manga and anime as primary sources for their feats and in regards to the movies and anime only content that both of them have I'll only be using the ones for Makarov as those are actually canon to the manga's content. To prove this, the Zentopia incident from the Key of the Starry Sky arc is brought up in the manga. And in 100 Years Quest it's shown that Hibiki is a Celestial Spirit Wizard, which is first shown in the Eclipse Celestial Spirit arc. And in regards to the movies Phoenix Priestess is canon as Eclair shows up in Natsu's personal beta-heaven as a spirit of his comrade who fell in battle. And Dragon Cry is also canon due to the Fourth Generation Dragon Slayers being brought up in 100 Year Quest. But for Whitebeard his movie and filler content will be excluded as I couldn't find any instances of them being reinforced through the canon manga material of One Piece. Also this will be a full army fight with Whitebeard having access to all of his crew that he could realistically have at one point so he'll have Ace and Blackbeard but not Oden. And Makarov will only having access to currently active members of Fairy Tail meaning anyone who left the guild like Mystogan not being included. Oh and be warned there are spoilers for both series.

Background

Whitebeard


Edward Newgate was born on the country of Sphinx, located in what is called the New World. However his childhood wasn't good due to growing up in one of the poorest countries in the New World, Sphinx wasn't able to afford paying the World Government to become an official nation of the world. Due to this the residents of Sphinx would typically be in substantial poverty. And Newgate was no different as he grew up poor and an orphan with a desire to have a family. Not much more is known of Whitebeard's past but eventually he would join a crew of pirates still going by his birth name of Newgate, and though his crew desired treasure most of all, Edward wanted nothing more than a family. 

Around the time Newgate was 24 he met another pirate named Rocks D. Xebec and lost to him in a Davy Back Fight, which forced him to join Rocks' crew. Although he didn't like his captain at all due to him being a genuinely horrible person who wanted to become king of the world, which made Whitebeard hate him and want to leave. Though he was forced to stay on the crew for a while, and eventually he would meet a young man named Kaido and invited him to stay on the crew due to his immense strength. And eventually he would get his wish as when the Rocks pirates travelled to God Valley they were forced to battle the vice-admiral Monkey D. Garp and his subordinates. As well as a competitor to the Pirate King race Gol D. Roger and his crew. And the Rocks pirates would lose this as Rocks lost his life in battle and the rest of his crew just left him to due to not respecting him as a captain at all, with the stronger members leaving to form their own crews with Newgate being no exception.

Edward Newgate while still answering to the name Newgate would adopt a new name when forming his pirate crew calling himself Whitebeard and naming his crew the Whitebeard Pirates. With his new crew he would finally get what he wanted his whole life, a family as he would come to see every single one of his crew as his "sons" and loved them like they were his own biological children. With the support of his crew he would even become what is known as one of  the Four Emperors of the Sea. And was even widely regarded as the strongest of the Emperors. One day he even "adopted" Rocks' son Marshall D. Teach better known as Blackbeard and even the son of his old rival Gol D. Roger, being Portgas D. Ace. Whom he both loved very dearly, until one day Teach went rogue and killed another member of the crew for a Devil Fruit that he wanted and defected from the crew. With Ace going after him due to Teach being under Ace's command so he felt responsible. Sadly this would result in catastrophic consequences as when Ace finally found Blackbeard, they fought and Ace lost, with Blackbeard even turning him over to the world Government. And Ace was scheduled to be executed at the Marine Headquarters. Though this led to an insane war between the pirates and government with the government winning as though Ace was rescued, he heard an insult about his adoptive father and paid the price for it with his life. And Whitebeard had been slashed and stabbed 267 times, shot by 152 bullets and 46 cannonballs. But before his death he would usher on the inspiring words to all pirates that the One Piece was real before dying standing up and not having a singular wound on his back.

Makarov


Makarov Dreyar had a beautifully tragic birth. Beautiful as he was born in the very guild that he would one day lead. But tragic as when the first master Mavis gave him his name, his mother Rita would pass away due to a curse that Mavis had unknowingly activated. And while that's tragic, what's more tragic is that besides that we have basically no knowledge of Makarov's childhood to a decent chunk of his adult life. But what we do know is that by the time Makarov turned 40 years old, the second guild master Precht would choose him as the successor of the role of Fairy Tail's master. Officially becoming Fairy Tail's 3rd master and he began to view the new members that would join his guild as his children and loved them like a parent would. Which was especially helpful to members of the guild who never know or never had parents to support them. And soon after this Makarov was deemed so powerful by the magic council on the continent of Ishgar, that he was granted the title of one of the Ten Wizard Saints, making him officially one of the ten strongest wizards in the entire continent.

Makarov's love for his foster children knows practically no bounds as when a rival guild known as Phantom Lord attacked 3 members of his guild he immediately gathered his children and marched on the guild and started a war between guilds. And after learning that Phantom Lord kidnapped one of the newer children he came to love, Lucy Heartfilia, confronted the master of Phantom Lord, Jose in a one-on-one confrontation to stop the hurting of his children. And in order to stop the war he reveals that he knows one of the three great spells passed down in the Fairy Tail guild. This spell called Fairy Law destroys anyone the caster sees as an enemy in their heart and given that Jose hurt his children, he became enemy number 1 to Makarov, which results in the complete incapacitation of Jose and his shadows that he sent to attack Makarov's children. And Fairy Tail emerged victorious in the war of the two top guilds.

This isn't the only time Makarov would show his undying love for his foster children. As he had to lead his children into two more wars against the dark guilds Grimoire Heart and Tartaros. And after both wars he would disband the guild in order to try and stop another way between Fairy Tail and the continent of the Alvarez Empire that way his children wouldn't be in harms way. And he would spend an entire year doing negotiations with their continents leader but they would fall through and the war between the continent and Fairy Tail would be underway in spite of Makarov's efforts. Although he didn't wish for this outcome his heart was touched by the understanding of his children for why he disbanded Fairy Tail a year prior. And when at war with the forces of Alvarez, Makarov couldn't stand seeing his precious children being harmed and decided once again to use his greatest tool, Fairy Law. Even knowing that the more enemies he targets with Fairy Law the more his life force would be drained. But not caring as he wanted his children to strive towards tomorrow and used Fairy Law in one last blaze of glory to protect the children that meant so much to him.


Skill & Experience

Whitebeard

When it comes to experience, Whitebeard has quite a lot of it. Given that he's been fighting since he was only a child due to the poor conditions of his childhood. And not just that given that Whitebeard had been operating as a pirate since at most his early 20's until his death at age 72. And his skill backs up this experience given that during his years of pirating he could go toe-to-toe with the future king of the pirates Gol D. Roger on a regular basis whenever the two encountered each other. And even after Roger's death Whitebeard had basically become the unofficial second pirate king and had the highest bounty of the four emperors by a substantial margin. And not just that he also mastered all 3 forms of Haki which can only be done by extremely skilled people who have the potential to change the world.

Makarov


Makarov Dreyar is one of the most experienced mages in the world of Fairy Tail. This is practically a given based on the fact that he's been Fairy Tail's master for over 40 years at this point in time. And his skill backs up this experience as he was able to go toe-to-toe with Fairy Tail's second master Precht and the fact that Makarov was able to become one of the Ten Wizard Saints within only a few years of becoming Fairy Tail's master.

Arsenal & Equipment

Whitebeard

Murakumogiri

Whitebeards main weapon he used for three decades until his death at Marineford. This giant naginata is one of the 12 Supreme Great Blades in the One Piece world. Being one of the 12 Supreme Great Blades it's one of the most powerful weapons in One Piece. Being able to clash with two other Great Blades being Oden's Enma and Roger's Ace without getting scratched at all. Newgate can even infuse his blade with Armament or Conquerors Haki to hit even harder with his blade.


Makarov

Wizard Saint Coat

Not really a part of his arsenal but something he keeps on him at almost all times. The coat he wears bears the symbol of the Ten Wizard Saints which marks Makarov as one of the ten most skilled and powerful wizards on the entire continent.

Abilities

Whitbeard

Gura Gura no mi

The main ability that Whitebeard possesses, that he gained when he ate a devil fruit. A food item that gives whoever eats it powers at the cost of being extremely weak to sea water. And Whitebeards devil fruit just so happened to be one of the strongest devil fruits in the entire world, being the Gura Gura no mi or the Quake Quake Fruit. This fruit gave Whitebeard the power to create tremors with just a swing of his fists. He can even use his devil fruit in conjunction with his giant weapon to deal out way heavier hits.

Kaishin (Seaquake)


This technique has Whitebeard punch and create cracks in the air which then sounds out shockwaves in the direction that he is facing. The shockwaves can even pass through any and all surfaces and damage them all. And if those shockwaves happen to pass through the earth it causes massive earthquakes that in turn create massive tsunamis that can attack Whitebeards enemies or protect him from attacks.

Gekishin (Severe Earthquake)


This technique is a variant of Kaishin that Whitebeard uses at close range to an enemy. In order to use this technique Whitebeard punches and cracks the air directly in front of his enemy which damages them greatly and sends shockwaves through their bodies to incapacitate them.

Shingen no Ichigeki 


A technique that Whitebeard uses by using his Devil Fruit powers to enshroud his fist in a bubble of pure vibrations and then punch downward to send out massive shockwaves that cause giant earthquakes. He even has a slightly modified version of this technique called Kabutowari where instead of punching downward with his vibration bubble he instead puts the bubble on his opponents head and sends tremors through their skulls.

Naginata Rasetsu


Whitebeard uses this move by putting a quake bubble around his naginata to deliver devastating strikes to his enemies that do more damage than just swinging his weapon.

Haki


A core part of the One Piece world that only a certain amount of people can actually use effectively. It basically allows the wielder of it to use their innate spiritual power to perform insane feats. And it's separated into three distinct types, which all have their own unique uses. The first type, Observation Haki allows the user to see attacks before they happen, sense the enemies location, and even see into the near future if their skills are high enough. The second type, Armament Haki has the user coat their bodies and sometimes their weapons into a type of protective armor to lessen damage against them and have their attacks hit way harder. And the final type Conqueror's Haki can only be used by a select chosen few who have the will to change or rule the world. This type of Haki nullifies the willpower of anyone its used against and causes them to collapse on the spot. And Whitebeard can use all 3 types of Haki and is very effective at using them.

Makarov

Giant Magic

Makarov's signature magic ability. This magic allows him to increase his size drastically which more than makes up for his normally short stature. Makarov can increase the size of only parts his body, most commonly his arms. And at one point to stall the dragon Acnologia, he increased his body to the size of Fairy Tail's sacred ground, Tenrou Island. And it seems like he can even increase the size of other people as well as a guild member had requested Makarov to make his stomach larger to help out his style of magic.

Light Magic


The other signature type of magic that Makarov specializes in. Light magic is a caster type magic in which the caster of it is able to manipulate light in various different ways. Like blasting light beams at enemies or turning into light balls that can be launched. It can even be emitted from the casters very body and depending on how bright it is, it can even blind Makarov's enemies. Or cause the surrounding areas to explode on impact. And Makarov even has the capability to combine his light magic with his giant magic for a spell.

Giant Wrath


Makarov emits destructive light from his body while also using a portion of his giant magic to cause mass destruction of anything in his path. He really only uses this spell if he's consumed by a blind rage.

Rain of Light


Makarov moves his hands and fingers in a myriad of ways which ends with him placing his index and middle fingers on his forehead and then sending out beams of light from those fingers at his enemy.


Fairy Law

The strongest spell in Makarov's catalogue and one of the Three Great Fairy Spells. Makarov forms a light ball in his hands and then claps his hands together. And when this spell is used it causes massive damage and in some cases completely kills anyone that the caster sees as an enemy in their heart. And it will leave friends and allies completely unharmed. Though it does have a drawback as the more people this spell is used on the more risk there is of the users life span shortening and can even kill the caster, like it did to Makarov before his resurrection.


Armies

Whitebeard
Whitebeard Pirates

The family that Whitebeard loved with all his heart more than anything are his sons the Whitebeard pirates. This pirate crew is so strong that it was the only one to ever match the Roger pirates in combat. This crew is separated into 16 divisions, each with their own leader and the division leaders all command at least 100 men. Meaning this is one of if not the biggest pirate crew ever as he basically has a grand fleet at his command. But for the sake of my sanity I'll only go over the more notable division commanders or other notable members of the crew.

First Division Commander Marco the Phoenix: Marco is the commander of the first division of the Whitebeard Pirates. Marco ate the Tori Tori no Mi model Phoenix, which is a devil fruit that gave him the ability to transform into a phoenix and a human-phoenix hybrid at will. And he also has some power over flames and his are also blue in color.

Second Division Commander: Portgas D. Ace: Ace was the commander of the second division of the Whitebeard Pirates. He ate the Mera Mera no mi, which is a devil fruit that gave him the ability to become fire itself. He can morph his body into fire to avoid attacks and has a plethora of different fire abilities that he can use. He also seemingly had the ability to use Conquerors Haki but wasn't aware of it and couldn't control it.

Third Division Commander: Jozu: Jozu is the commander of the third divison. He ate the Kira Kira no mi which gave him the ability to turn his body into diamond to become the shield of the Whitebeard Pirates which earned him the nickname Diamond Jozu. He also has the ability to use both Armament and Observation Haki.

Marshall D. Teach: Blackbeard: While not a division commander during his time with the Whitebeard Pirates he was offered the position many times but denied it only because he didn't want to become a public figure yet. While on the Whitebeard Pirates he ate the Yami Yami no mi which gives him the ability to turn into pure darkness in a similar fashion as to how Ace turns into fire.

Sixteenth Division Commander: Izuo: As the commander of the sixteenth division Izuo had command over the lower ranking members of Whitebeards crew. But don't let his relatively low rank among the crew blind you as each commander of Whitebeards crew is immensely powerful and the World Government even gave Izuo a bounty of 510,000,000. Truly acknowledging how much of a threat he truly is. Izuo's main thing is his expert marksmanship with his dual flintlock pistols.

Makarov

Fairy Tail

The ragtag group of misfits that Makarov loves like they're his own children are the troops that make up the Fairy Tail guild. For the longest time they were seen as the strongest guild in all of Fiore until there core members disappeared for 7 years which plummeted them all the way down to last place. But immediately after the core members came back they skyrocketed back up to the strongest guild in the country immediately. Although during that 7 year gap a bunch of their numbers left only leaving them with about 40 members compared to the little over 100 they had before. But for the sake of getting this blog done when I want it I'm only going to go over their S-Class Wizards and other Wizards who are notable like the dragon slayers and members of Team Natsu.

Natsu Dragneel: Natsu is Fairy Tail's resident trump card should they need one. He specializes in Fire Dragon Slayer magic, which lets him take on the properties of a dragon, and his magic is especially designed to kill dragons. And as a Fire Dragon Slayer he can even eat all kinds of fire, both natural and magical to replenish his energy and get even stronger. Although there is one rule to that, he cannot eat his own fire.

Gray Fullbuster: Gray's main magic is Ice Maker magic, which lets him sculpt practically any inanimate object or weapon with his Ice and despite them being made of ice, his constructs are still insanely durable. He also inherited Ice Devil Slayer magic from his father, which like Dragon slayer magic is specifically designed to kill devils. And again like dragon slayer magic Gray can eat Ice to replenish his energy and gain a power boost though he cant eat his own Ice. Gray can also switch between the two types of magic he wants to use or can even combine the two together.

Erza Scarlet: Fairy Tail's strongest female wizard. She specializes in Requip magic, in which she stores different armors and weapons all with different strengths and elements that she can change into instantly.

Laxus Dreyar: Makarov's blood grandson and the Lightning Dragon Slayer. Pretty much everything I said about Natsu's magic applies to Laxus as well, other than the fact that he uses and eats Lightning instead of Fire

Gildarts Clive: The strongest wizard that Fairy Tail houses or at least he was until everyone became relative to him in 100 Year Quest. But that still shows just how powerful he really is as no one caught up to him until the sequel series. Gildarts specializes in Crush magic, which breaks things down into pieces and can even do that to people. Although when used on people it'll turn them into mini versions of themselves instead of destroying them.

Before The Feats

Just to be clear, during the feats section I will be going over feats that Whitebeard and Makarov have performed, as well as feats that members of their armies have performed as I am treating this like a war between the two factions.

Feats & Scaling

Whitebeard & His Pirates

Practically every member of the Whitebeard Pirates is comparable if not superior to those of other pirate crews and their captains so they should scale to speed feats performed by them.

My Verdict

Stats

Attack Potency
When it comes to the amount of power Whitebeard and Makarov can dish out by themselves Newgate has this locked down due to being able to produce magnitude 6 earthquakes throughout the One Piece world being called at around 33 to 54 Exatons. Compared to Makarov's Fairy Law capping out at most around 326 Megatons. So at first glance this seems like a slam dunk in favor of Whitebeard. But if you were thinking that, you seem to forget that this is an army battle and we're taking feats of their armies into account. So now we have feats like Erza destroying a meteor that can get up to 3.2 Zettatons which would be put above Whitebeards global earthquakes. Unless you're like me and wanted to look for a number that could be put higher due to Whitebeard dying at that point in time and luckily for me I found one for this feat that he could potentially produce in his prime. And with a multiplier of 592 applied to that feat it now comes up to around 20 Zettatons. (Thanks AzureWriter83 go check out their Natsu VS Luffy fan Death Battle). But unfortunately even with that generous scaling the Whitebeard Pirates would still fall short of the Fairy Tail Wizards due to a good chunk of them being directly even to Selene in her human form. And Selene was able to increase the size of the moon simply by getting serious in her fight with Suzaku. And that moon feat is typically calced at around 2.72 yottatons. Which is over 100 times greater than even that highball for Whitebeard. So this point goes to Makarov and Fairy Tail.

Speed

Next up, speed. This category is slightly closer than the last one as both the Whitebeard Pirates and the members of Fairy Tail have relativistic to faster than light feats and scaling. These mainly come from characters who by the nature of their powers either fight at light speed or fire off lightspeed attacks being the Light human Kizaru and the White Dragon Slayer Sting. With the highest canon feat I could find for the Whitebeard Pirates that they could reasonably scale to being Zoro dodging the Pacifistas lasers at around 18 times faster than light. And the fastest thing I could find for the Fairy Tail Wizards is scaling to Selene again who blitzed The guild master of Diabolos at around 30 times the speed of light. While the number for the Fairy Tail Wizards is technically higher, the speed difference isn't so much that it matters really at all so I would call this category a tie due to both factions being relative in speed.


Skill & Experience

When it comes down to locking down who wins the skill and experience category, it's a bit harder. The reason for this is that we know basically nothing of Makarov's backstory other than that he became Fairy Tail's master at 40 and continued into the current year in which he's 90. So he's been the master of Fairy Tail for around 50 years. He also managed to become one of the Ten Wizard Saints within just a few years of becoming the master. And comparing that to Whitebeard, it seems he has the experience down even though he's lived for less time we know that he's been a pirate since at least his early 20's and started fighting as a child. And on top of that he became one of the Four Emperors of the Sea and was even the rival of the future pirate king Gol D. Roger. Meaning that based on what we know Whitebeard himself is more experience than Makarov. Though when comparing their armies it gets a bit trickier due to their not really being a timeline for when they joined up with Whitebeard and Makarov, so based on that I would give this category to Whitebeard and his pirates.

Armies

Now finally let's compare the armies themselves. One advantage that the Whitebeard Pirates have is their overwhelming number as they have over 1,000 pirates at their disposal compared to the around 40 members of the Fairy Tail guild. With these overwhelming numbers most of the Fairy Tail wizards would definitely go down. But then there's a couple wrinkles there, first, most of Whitebeards pirates don't scale to him and are nowhere near as strong while all of Team Natsu scales to Selene. Second, Natsu by himself once took out a chunk of Zeref's army that counted as 973 men, by himself with a single attack. And Third while Marco and Ace could potentially scale to Whitebeard, Natsu is still stronger and on top of that they both attack using fire and are made of fire, something that gets hard countered by Natsu due to his nature as a Fire Dragon Slayer, meaning he's not only immune to most fire, but can eat it and gain a massive power boost while replenishing his energy at all times. And one final factor that isn't necessarily related to armies, while Makarov's Fairy Law's attack potency is lacking in comparison to the stuff Whitebeard can dish out, it can still even instantly win the war due to it targeting whoever the caster sees as an enemy and completely destroying them, ignoring strength and durability outright.  So due to those factors, I believe that Makarov and Fairy Tail would get the final win here.

Conclusion

Whitebeard & His Sons
Advantages:
  • His army far outnumbers the members of Fairy Tail
  • Can even take out most of Fairy Tail by himself
  • More experienced than Makarov and his children
Equal:
  • Relative in speed
Disadvantages:
  • Most of his army doesn't scale to his level of power while a good chunk of Fairy Tail Wizards are stronger than even himself
  • While his army does outnumber Fairy Tail's, Natsu on his own has taken out massive armies of close to 1,000 members, and he's far stronger then he was back then.
  • Whitebeard's strongest division commanders Ace and Marco, get hard countered by Natsu own his own
  • Fairy Law can just instantly win this battle without even needing to rely on Fairy Tail.

Makarov & His Children

Advantages:
  • While the members of Fairy Tail are outnumbered, Natsu himself has taken out armies of close to 1,000 men by himself.
  • Again Natsu himself even completely counters the two strongest members in Whitebeards army
  • A good chunk of Fairy Tail Wizards scale to Selene which makes them stronger than even Whitebeard himself, and most of his army doesn't scale to him.
  • Makarov's Fairy Law can just instantly obliterate Whitebeard and his army without having to get his children involved
Equal:
  • Relative in speed
Disadvantages:
  • Most of Fairy Tail does get outnumbered by the Whitebeard Pirates
  • Most of Fairy Tail could be wiped out by Whitebeard himself as they don't scale to the meteor feat or Selene.
  • Less experienced than Whitebeard and his sons

Overall this war is really close, with the two factions being relative in speed and holding other advantages over each other. But if you've been reading this for the whole time you would know who I believe the winner to be. Makarov and Fairy Tail just have more win cons than Whitebeard, with Team Natsu and the other two Dragon Slayers being stronger than a possible highball of Whitebeard. And on top of that because of how Fairy Law works it on it's own could destroy Whitebeard and his army. So because of all these I believe that Makarov and Fairy Tail would be the winners.
